Reasons for emigration
Majority of remote rural places and islands where there is no possibility for children to travel into bigger cities has organized their schools in the combined classes. It is common situation that one teacher has several classes at the same time and at the same classroom.
The best example is a school in Unije Island where one lower primary school teacher teaches 10 pupils at the same time. (2nd, 3rd, 6th, and 8th grade)
These are also the only children on the island that are attending primary school. In the most remote rural areas, one teacher teaches only lower primary pupils (form 1st to 4th grade) but in combination of pupils from two grades (e.g. one teacher teaches in one class pupils form 2nd and 4th grade).
- Non-existing primary education
- Low-quality primary education
- Closing schools – lack of children or professional stuff
- Primary schools in rural, remote areas and islands
- Studies have shown that one of the reasons young families are deciding to leave those places is non-existent or low-quality primary education. Another problem lies in closing primary schools in remote, rural areas and islands because families are sending their children to a primary school in the nearest bigger city.
From 1 to 15 pupils
The best example is primary school on Krapanj island where parents send their children to primary school Brodarica on the mainland (few miles with boat) leaving school on Island with only one pupil whose parents decided not to send their child away.
The best example is a school in Unije Island where one lower primary school teacher teaches 10 pupils at the same time. (2nd, 3rd, 6th, and 8th grade)
