Jacques Cartier trades for fur with the Labrador's natives

On March 19, 1534, Cartier was assigned the mission of "undertaking the voyage of his kingdom to the New Lands to discover certain islands and countries where there said to be great qualities of gold and other riches". The following April 20, the navigators from Saint- Malo cast off with 2 ships and a crew of 61 people. Twenty days later he and his crew reached Newfoundland. When they sailed to new land, instead of finding gold and riches, they found fur and fishes. When Cartier sailed farther up the gulf and into the bay of Gaspe. he and his men were greeted warmly by a first nations group called the Iroquoian nation of the Stadaconce. They had come from their home which is now the site of Quebec city, of a fishing expedition. Cartier traded lots of stuff to the Iroquoian group, the thing that he traded were knives, food and lots of European goods.

Founding Of Hudson Bay

Company

In the late 1600’s or 17th century the fur trade was a really big success in north America because of the Europeans wanting felt hats made from beaver fur. The two French traders Médard Chouart des Groseilliers and Pierre-Esprit Radisson, took advantage of that and made a trading company to collect as much fur resources as they can around Hudson bay since it was easier to find fur resource, and they still collected fur resources, even though the governor of new France did not give them a trading licences.after collecting as much fur resources as they can, they went to the first nations to trade it for fur. They came back to the French with a cargo of fur.But instead of getting rewarded they got fined for not having a trading license. Most of the furs were confiscated, they were charged and Groseillier was in jail for a short time. After failing,to make the French be interested to the idea,They sailed to England in 1665.When they sailed to England, they met prince Rupert, Rupert was interested about the idea and convinced the king, merchants and noble man to support in their adventure. The ships the use to sail was called eaglet and the nonsuch. Radisson was sailing in the Eaglet and Groseilliers was sailing in the Nonsuch and set sail on June 3rd 1668.The Eaglet didn’t make it to Canada because of the storm so it had to return back to England. But for nonesuch it landed on James Bay on September 29th 1668, which was 3 month and 26 days.At the southern end of James bay they were trading with the first nations during the winter. The trading was successful and in the Nonsuch they came back to England with a cargo of fur.In 1670’s ruperts land was created by the a royal charted signed by Charles the 2nd, ruperts land is the area where all the rivers flowing into Hudson bay.The Hudson bay company or the HBC was also created with the royal charted, and HBC is the owner of ruperts land.

Standard of Trade

Samuel de Champlain made North America’s first fur trading

Here are

some extra assets :

The first nations were smart traders, they were known to find trading post that could give them better deals to trade with,it was a big problem in Rupert's land because it meant if one trading post would have a really good deal and the rest wouldn't be notice, that meant that the one trading post with a lot of fur resources would go out stock. So to resolve that problem in 1733 they made something called the "standard of trade",it was a price document that showed how much european goods you can get depending on the size and weight of the fur.Every trading post in Rupert land had to have the price document,so every trading post could have the a fair amount of furs, and none of the european goods could go out of stock to fast

In 1608,Samuel de champlain made a trading post in Quebec city, the trading post was the first fur trading post in north america. The city was then known as a fur trading center. The french, started to make the trading center bigger, and add more trading post around the st.lawrence river and The great lakes. They then controlled most of the early fur trades that became canada. The french also expanded their trading along the mississippi river, which means the french traded out of canada, that shows the french own a lot of the fur trade.

Introduction

the fur trade is trade between the first nation people and the europeans.

The first nation would trade their animal fur for the european goods. The furs were use for making felt hats. The fur fashion grew popular very fast and was the most valuable through out

the 1500's to the 1980's.The fur trade is actually is also the reason why there was further exploration in Canada and why we are living in Canada right now.

1880

Introduced the fur coats

Conclusion

As you can see,the fur trade is a interesting and important time, and some of it contributed to why we are living in Canada today, just think about it if the HBC wasn't created this country would be like France. Thanks for listening to our presentation, and hope you enjoyed you say.BYE!

The fur fashion industries went down by a lot and their couldn't make their popular felt hats since silk hats were much popular choice. So instead they introduce a fur coat made out of beaver pelt in the 1880,but the fur coat fashion started trending in the 1920's,when the woman's fashion started adding a fur coat made out of beaver pelt in their fashion. This meant that the fur trade and the fur production can last for a couple more years.

John Cabot discovers Canada's east coast

1497

1850's

Silk hats been introduce

In 1497, John Cabot set off on a voyage to Asia.On his way he, like Christopher Columbus, ran into an island off the coast of North America. In 1497, John Cabot returned to England after exploring the east coast of Canada. He told the English about the great supply of cod off the island of Newfoundland to fish. When they went ashore to dry their fish they met the Beothuk, Mi’kmaq and more. These First Nations peoples exchanged animal furs for iron goods that the fishers had brought with them. In the 1400s, other European explorers began sailing across the Atlantic Ocean. There were many reasons for these explorers to come to Canada. For a long time, Europeans had traded with India and China. However, the overland journey east through Europe and Asia was long and dangerous. European rules wanted to find a water route to the west. In the search for this route, explorers came upon the lands that would eventually become Canada and other North American countries.

1713

Treaty of Utrecht

The felt hats that was made out of beaver fur was a major success,a lot of people in Europe wanted the felt hats since it was trending big in fashion. But,in the 1850's,the fashion trend changed from beaver fur felt hats to silk hats, the change in fashion was because queen Victoria's husband prince Albert started wearing silk type felt hats. This change cause the production of the animal fur to lower down by a lot.

the competition for fur and land in Canada was the reason why there was big problems between France and England. for years, the two countries would give each other problems. They even started battling each other in canada, the even started stealing the fur resources form their trading post and settlements. So in 1713,they resolve their problems by signing a peace treaty called the treaty of Utrecht. The treaty of Utrecht gave the English trading rights over Rupert's land, and the french were also given the same amount of rights for the area around the St.Lawrence river. The two nations both sign the treaty's rights.

Voyageurs Law 1681

1930-1980

Ending of the fur trade

When the English made the HBC ( Hudson Bay Company) The French struggled with more competition, They wanted to trade with the First Nations. That's more farther away om their settlements,so they can control most of the fur trade. So in 1681, the French made a new law that you can travel to other places to meet the First Nations to trade . They still needed a license but they didn't need to make a settlement anymore. These kind of fur traders were called Voyagers.

in 1929,beavers in Canada it was discovered that all of the hunting of beavers was actually making a big population of the beavers almost instinct. So in the 1930's the manager of Rupert's house and his wife was the first people in Canada to make a beaver preserve to save the beavers from nearly getting instinct, and in 1944 The HBC actually approved it and helped make the beaver persevere expand and it took up to about this much of Hudson bay.All of this meant that the fur trend is starting to die off bit by bit and finally 1980 the fur trade ended
