Cliff drainage

Soft management

Soft engineering options are often less expensive than hard engineering options. They are usually more long-term and sustainable, with less impact on the environment.

Hard Engineering

Steel barriers and drains put into a cliff to intercept the water movement through the cliff which causes mass movement. The 'bunny' at Barton-on-sea had an artificial stream draining excess water.

sea defenses at Swanage

Hard engineering options tend to be expensive, short-term options. They may also have a high impact on the landscape or environment and be unsustainable.Swanage has 1.8km of coastal defence works, mainly concrete or stone sea walls and timber groynes. The sea wall and groynes to the south of the bay were put in place in the late nineteenth century.

Rock Armour

Large boulders are piled up on the beach. To defend the coast, for instance In Barton-on-sea.

Groynes

A wooden barrier built at right angles to the beach. To prevent long shore drift and allow beaches to form/build.Eighteen timber groynes were put in place in 2005, constructed out of certified tropical hardwood and some material salvaged from the pre-existing groynes.

Advantages

Absorb the energy of waves.

Allows the build up of a beach.

Disadvantages

Can be expensive to obtain and transport the boulders.

Beach replenishment

Advantages

Prevents the movement of beach material along the coast by longshore drift.

Allows the build up of a beach. Beaches are a natural defence against

erosion and an attraction for tourists.

Disadvantages

Can be seen as unattractive.

Costly to build and maintain.

This replaces beach or cliff material that has been removed by erosion or longshore drift. In November, 90,000 m3 of sand was deposited on the beach. The works were finally completed in June 2006 at an estimated cost of £2.2 million. The beach needs to be replenished with around 40,000m3 of sand every 20 years.

Advantages

Natural Defence against erosion and coastal floodings. It also attracts tourists. Relatively inexpensive.

Disadvantages

Requires constant maintenance as it is washed away.
