Elijah

  • Honest
  • Fragile
  • Compassionate

"Don't you cry, boy. Don't you dare. Only reason any of us need to be crying is if, come tomorrow, you weren't nothing but a dream. But you is real, ain't you?"

In this quote, Elijah came back to see this woman so he wouldn't break his promise. He is fragile because he always cries and he is comassionate because he had a heart and took the lady's baby so it would be free from slavery.

The Preacher

  • Sneaky
  • Thief
  • Dishonest

"He done try to blow my head off, Spencer. He done try to kill me to steal Leroy's money."

The Preacher says he is a good, Christian man, but he has murdered many people and has stolen people's prized posessions.

Mr. Leroy

  • Hard Working
  • Shy

"Most times me and Mr. Leroy don't say much whilst we work, not only 'cause it's hard to talk to someone that's knocking away trees and swinging a heavy axe, but also 'cause Mr. Leroy don't seem partial to running his mouth nohow."

Just across the Michigan border into Canada a young boy named Elijah Freeman and his family lived free of slavery. Elijah was the first freely born child in Buxton. One day, the Preacher steals money from one of the hardest working men in all of the new settlement, and Elijah quickly heads for America in search of this wicked human being so he can get the money back. When Elijah finds himself in a sticky situation with some captured runaway slaves. Will he be fragile or find the courage to make his way back to Buxton?

Always show respect to adults and the others that are around you.

"You always keep in mind, Elijah, that I'm growned and you ain't. I cares 'bout you like you's my own boy, but you always got to give me my repect." -Mr. Leroy

Theme

I liked this story because it really describes what life was like for slaves, and how thankful freed slaves were during that time period. It personally makes me think twice about how bad life really was for some people.

The setting of this story is in Buxton, Canada during the time of slavery (Mid-Late 1800's).

Why did I Like it?

Would I recommend the story?

Yes, I would recomend the story, because it helps to give a better understanding of the seriousness that African American slaves had to go through. It is really descriptive and makes it feel like someone has been put in the slaves' situation.

Elijah of Buxton

Mr. Leroy cuts down trees all day and for most of the night. Somewhere in Mr. Leroy's past there has been an incedent where he was humbled. Therefore, he does not speak that often.
