Tundra Abiotic Factors

Tundra means land without trees and its come from the Finnish word tunturia, meaning treeless plain.

Characteristic features of Tundra

cold climate

small biotic diversity

plain vegetation structure

Short season of growth and reproduction

Energy and nutrients in the form of dead organic material

Large population oscillations

Representative Flora and Fauna

The Tundra has a lot of plant life within this biome. Some common plants include the bearberry, arctic moss, Caribou moss, Diamond leaf willow, Labrador Tea, Pasque Flower, and the Tufted Saxifrage.

Adaptations

Animals: In the Arctic Tundra there are many animals that survive and thrive despite the cold and harsh climate.

Examples:

Polar Bear

Caribou

Arctic Fox

Muskox

Adaptations

Plants: Small plants grow close to the ground for warmth.

Fuzzy stems provide protection from wind.

Geographic Location

Permafrost is a layer of frozen soil and dead plants that extends some 1,476 feet (450 meters) under the surface. In much of the Arctic, it is frozen year round. In the southern regions of the Arctic, the surface layer above the permafrost melts during the summer and this forms bogs and shallow lakes that invite an explosion of animal life.

Major Threats

• The melting of the permafrost as a result of global warming could radically change the landscape and what species are able to live there.

Solutions

• Switch to alternative energy uses to minimize human-made global warming.
