The Comedy of Manners
Pride & Prejudice
How does it relate to pride and prejudice?
Lydia/Kitty
In pride in prejudice you see very often that the upper class frequently look down upon the lower class by their appearance, and the upper class make it their job to specifically make the lower class the main topic of the joke. In pride and prejudice the jokes are satirical and witty.
- Lydia and Kitty are shown as examples of The Comedy of manners because they ridicule themselves in a way that makes the Bennett family looked bad upon which is one of the reasons Mr. Bingley and Mr. Dancy are hesitant about the Bennet girls.
- By making it obvious that they are in need of a husband, it brings negative attention to the family from people in higher ranks, specially with the Lydia's scadal with Mr. Wickham.
What is The Comedy of Manners?
The difference of classes and the comedy between them.
Lady Catherine
A comedy that satirizes behavior in social groups, especially the upper classes with lower classes. The comedy of manners is another way of separating the two social groups and being able to show the difference between the two groups based on appearance and how they interact differently with individuals.
Mrs. Bennett
Mary Bennet
- Mrs. Barnett's way of showing that she was better than everyone and upper class was her beauty and showing off her wealthy belongings
Is was socially correct at the time for people to play a song on the piano at an event such as a Ball, but Mary decides to keep playing driving attention to herself.
- Lady Catherine is a prime example of how the upper class view the lower class .
- She quickly even notifies Mr.darcy that Elizabeth is not equal to his class unlike lady Catherine's daughter who is more than qualified in being Mr.Darcy's wife.
- "In marrying your nephew, I should not consider myself as quitting that sphere. He is a gentleman; I am a gentleman's daughter; so far we are equal." (Austen 281 ) In chapter 56, this quote shows how Elizabeth has to explain to lady Catherine that she is worthy enough to marrying Mr. Darcy.
Mr.Collins
- Mr.Collins manners seems to need a big adjustment the reason that Mr.Collins behavior is despicable at times because he thinks that individuals should pay him in respect because he is in acquaintance with lady Catherine and this makes him superior to a lot of people.
- One example is him going up to Mr.Darcy without being introduced.
