Event 12: The Twentieth Congress of the Soviet Communist Party

(1956)

"Kruschev reversed Stalinist policy by urging 'the peaceful coexistence between states with differing political and social systems.' This marked the beginning of a brief loosening of the most stringent forms of censorship in the Soviet Union." ("United States Relations With Russia")

("Communism for All People")

Event 7: The Warsaw Pact

(1954)

"Although it was stressed by all that the Warsaw Treaty was based on total equality of each nation and mutual non-interference of one another's internal affairs, the Pact quickly became a powerful political tool for the Soviet Union to hold sway over its allies and harness the power of their combined military." ("The Warsaw Pact")

Event 6: Ray Anderson's "Stalin Kicks the Bucket"

(1953)

Old Joe kicked the bucket, he's long gone

He won't worry us from now on

He lived in a place they call Moscow

His number came up and he had to go

Yes, old Joe's dead and gone

He stayed around too long

And nobody now can save his hide

'Cause old Joe laid right down and died

Old Joe won't worry us no more

He killed the helpless by the score

Now I hope he's satisfied

Since old Joe's taken his last ride

Chorus

While near the end, he couldn't talk

He's paralyzed and he couldn't walk

He died with a hemorrhage in the brain

They have a new fireman on the devil's train

Chorus

Although he was a man of power

He was scared of Eisenhower

So now the devil can retire

'Cause old Joe Stalin will keep the fire

Chorus

Event 5: The Death of Stalin

("Warsaw Pact Logo")

March 5, 1953

Stalin became increasingly paranoid as he got older, which led to his death due to a brain hemorrage. Americans were fearful that someone worse would take his place. ("Russia: How much of a change" 3).

("Joseph Stalin")

The Cold War: 1950s

Event 9: Vietnam War

(1954-1975)

"1954 JULY Following the surrender of a French garrison at Dien Bien Phu two months earlier, a peace conference in Geneva divides Vietnam between a Communist North and an American-backed South" (TimeFrame AD 1950-1990 The Nuclear 16).

("Vietnam War History")

(Nuclear Vault)

By: Sierra Hollon, Mackenzie Stewart, and Brittany Church

(1951)

Event 3: "Duck and Cover"

Event 15: Segregation in the 1950's

American racism became a potent weapon for the Soviet Union

"How could a country that preached freedom and democracy

to the rest of the world, condone racism?" asked the Soviets. ("Kallen 38")

("Segregation")

Event 2: The Korean War

Event 4: The Soviets and the Olympics

(1952)

(1950-1953)

"The Olympics not only display the political setting inside the Soviet Union, but also how foreign relations evolved between the USSR and the other nations of the world." ("The Soviet Union and the Olympics") The USSR and the U.S. battled for political dominance.

("The 1980 Olympic Boycott")

"While the end of World War II brought peace and prosperity to most Americans, it also created a heightened state of tension between the Soviet Union and the United States." ("Teaching with Documents: The United")

Event 1: The Sino-Soviet Treaty

(1950)

"The Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China, the two largest communist nations in the world, announce the signing of a mutual defense and assistance treaty." ("USSR and PRC Sign")

The announcement of the signing of this treaty frightened America, for they feared of the spread of communism, therefore the tension rose between the USSR and the U.S.

("China: $2500 Sino-Soviet Treaty")

("Korean War Records")

Event 10: U.S. Prohibits Soviets From Entering Certain Areas In Country

(1955)

"This map shows where Soviet citizens, who were required to have a detailed itinerary approved before obtaining a visa, could and could not go during their time in the United States." ("1955 Map Shows No-Go")

("1955 Map Shows No-Go")

Event 13: U.S. Massive Retaliation

(1957)

("Pivotal Event in US History")

The Cold War mainly involved the U.S. and the USSR. Everyone feared one thing: nuclear war. If nuclear war broke out, there was no chance of survival for citizens like the after math of heroshima and nagasaki. Hundreds of thousands can die seconds.

Event 11: Space Race

1955-1972

"By landing on the moon, the United States effectively 'won' the space race that had begun with Sputnik's launch in 1957." (History.com Staff) Relations between the two countries were redeemed when an astronaut from each country shook hands in space.

("Soviet Challenge")

Event 8: The Atomic Energy Act

(1954)

"Also reflected in the new law is the fervent desire of our people to proceed with a plan for an International Atomic Energy Agency which would advance the peacetime applications of atomic energy, as we proposed last December to the United Nations." ("Dwight D. Eisenhower") America wants to create this agency and they will do it with or without Soviet approval.

("Atomic Energy Act")
