Don't get me wrong Gilles Lake Is the nicest place in Timmins to take your dog for a walk. It is beautiful. But with a little bit of work it could be that much better!

Gilles lake is sounded by fast food joints and grocery stores. This is one of the main problems for the amount of trash you will find at this lake.

This small lake was named after Alex Gillies, a prominent figure in the history of the city. In 1915, the lake was about three times its current size. Since then, mine tailings have taken over what was once the northeast part of the lake.

These are the few and simple suggestions I have to make gilles great!

As for the bird situation... The park can put up signs for the public to not feed the birds.

Environmental Issues

Large amounts of trash everywhere. There is tons of trash all throughout the lake and throughout the forest around it.

Too many Ducks and pigeons, this is problem because they lose feathers and leave fesses all around the lake.

During the summer a swimming area is designated on the northwest side of the lake. Picnic areas and public washrooms are also available. In the winter, skating is often available in the southwest bay. They also have a water ski park during the summer.

They can also hire people to clean up the lake every so often. They could pick up the trash and make sure the garbage is going where it belongs.

Lastly they can build a fence around the lake to ensure that lose garbage doesn't find its way the the lake.

Too Many Birds!

Gillies Lake is a 20 ha (49 acres) lake in Timmins. It is served by a publicly accessible 2.5 kilometres of walking trail. A boardwalk offers wheelchair access avoiding a hill climb and Lakeshore Road (Gillies Lake Conservation Area. n.d.).

Why so Much Pollution?

Walking around the lake you'll find many different kinds of birds. However most of them are pigeons, segels and ducks. There is an unbelievable amount of them. With all these birds there are feathers and bird poop everywhere.

How Can we fix This?

There Is a McDonalds right off the lake also a KFC and subway and Tim Hortons... etc.

There isn't enough garbage cans around the lake for the amount of fast food joints there are close by.

One way to fix the littering situation is to invest money into putting more trash cans around the lake.

Sometimes the city of Timmins sends people to clean up the lake

The lake is very heavily polluted many people (me being one of them) have stopped visiting due to the amount of trash that is there.

Gilles lake is located at the heart of Timmins, Ontario

The reason for too many birds is because people bring their left over bread to the lake and feed them. This attracts more birds. Personally I hate walking around gilles because of all these birds, just don't feel comfortable around all them. I'm sure many others feel the same way as I do about these birds.

Many people also walk their dogs around the lake and have no where to put the dogs poop. You shouldn't have to walk 500m before you find a trash can.

These are very small problems. If those two weren't an issue gilles would be a great place to take walks. Gilles is still very beautiful and alive. If those two issues didn't exist it would be that much nicer. However if people continue to litter and feed these birds it could become a bigger problem.

I took a walk around gilles lake yesterday to collect some pictures and prove my point. Here is a picture of trash at the lake.

This is one of people feeding the ducks off the dock.
