It is believed the Sumerians were the first to build and use a wheel. first being used to move heavy objects it evolved into a key part in a major war machine, the chariot, which was also a Sumerian innovation.

Mesopotamia was a great ancient civilization comprised of two rivers, the Tigris and the Euphrates, that created the fertile crescent to allow the great innovations that occurred. These leaps forward in technology and communication set an example of how a civilization could excel.
Cuneiform, invented by the Sumerians, was the first written language to grace the earth. This allowed for accurate record keeping and preserving of knowledge.
Counting, Checkers and Sailing
Counting was yet another first for the Sumerians being based on the the way they divided up the day into 24 hours, 60 minutes, and 60 sec, which has been observed for 4000 years. Also the game of checkers was invented by the Sumerians along with sailing which would change history forever.
While all the fore-mentioned innovations were significant contributions to humanity there is one that is the true legacy of Mesopotamia, Farming. The techniques of irrigation and plowing allowed for less people to grow their own food and freed them up to come up with all of the inventions and more.
