EDM started out as the occasional blip in the backbeat or even a full backround track. It was very experimental at first and came with the arrival of Synthesizers and the TR-808 Drum Machine. It found its first baby steps in Disco, which became popular in the mid 1980's. From there, the genre took a turn into Post Disco, a newer, upbeat form of Disco. But it had not become it own genre just yet. Next came the arrival of Electro, which was much more upbeat and deeper sounding than traditional Disco. That came around the late 1980's. Electro spawned another subgenre that will come to be the most popular EDM subgenre in history. That is House. House is a much lighter form of Electro, but it has a big upbeat tone to it. House is the kind of EDM you tend to hear on the radio a lot. Then, on from then, came Techno, Acid House, and Rave. Techno became really popular with the last generation, meaning in the late 1980's and 1990's. Then came Breakbeat Hardcore, Jungle, and Drum & Bass. After came some combo genres such as Dubstep and Electro House.
So, in conclusion, EDM has come a long way from Underground "Getting really high while dancing" to one of the biggest genres of music in history.
Unfortunately, with such popularity and so many festivals, comes a lot of drug usage. The drug scene has been around for a while, since the Underground days of EDM. one of the most popular drugs used is called MDMA(More commonly known as Ecstasy). Its is a mind altering drug that hightens senses and causes hallucinations. Although a lot of people use drugs while at these Raves and Festivals, there is also a larger amount of loyal fans that enjoy them without drug use. And unfortunately, it is stigmatized by drug use.
In recent years, with help from the internet, like Youtube and Soundcloud, EDM has become the fastest growing genre of music in history. It is merging with the mainstream and is heavily influencing all sorts of other genres like Pop, Hip-Hop, Rap, Metal, and even some Classical music. The U.S. and the U.K. have a massive market in the EDM culture and the music itself. It is a $6,200,000,000 industry and is continuing to grow every year. A lot of other countries and nations want in on the EDM culture and industry.
There are also many different Festivals in dedication to EDM. Some of these include:
There are many artists and EDM duo's or even groups that have become incredibly famous in EDM.
And many more...
