Who are The Mayans?
- The Mayans were a Mesoamerican civilization
- They are most famous for having the only fully developed written language of the pre-Columbian America
- Also famous for their history of art, architecture, and mathematical systems.
- Without the Mayan culture, geometry would not be as prevalent in modern architecture and design.
Mayan Architecture
Examples of Mayan buildings:
Plaza, Platform, and Temple
- Every plaza, platform, and temple show signs of reflective symmetry, as well as rotational symmetry.
- The Mayans valued this concept of symmetry, in that it was the most efficient design for something as large as a ceremonial plaza.
Mayan Calendar:
Pyramid of Chichen Itza
Mayan Number System
- The Mayans used the dot, bar, and shell to represent numbers.
- This system is a positional numeric system because the position in which the dots, bars, and even shells were placed determined the number that was being represented.
Mayan Weavings
Where did the Mayans get their geometric shapes?
- A few elements from geometry are also constantly appearing in their weaving designs.
- These elements include translation, reflection, and rotation.
- In the figure below the shape clearly shows a reflection.
