>1607 - The British founded and maintained 13 colonies. They later called New England along the Atlantic Coast.

>The Hudson Bays Company mantained a fur trade for Britian to the north and west ofNew France in 1670

>In 1660 the British beat the Dutch and maintained a fur empitre south of the St. Lawrence River, Lake Ontario and lake Erie.

>In the fur-trade, the French had to work very closely with the First Nations. The French needed help from the First Nations peoples to copete with the British.

>The Hurons were the assistance of the First Nations peoples.

In 1740, the British had a lot of power in North America. The French, British, Spanish, and First Nations also lived in New France moreover New England.

1. French held/controlled the most.

2. British held/controlled the second most.

>The canoes were small, and required 2 people to paddle.

>They were narrow, allowing them to go faster.

>They were also light and easy to handle on waterfalls, obstacles etc;

>This co-operation between Montreal and First Nations led to the founding of the North West Company.

>They built a chain of trading posts along the river systems

>The rivalry between the French, the North West Company, and the British Hudson's Bay Company was fierce.

>Snowshoes - animal skin

>Wood - allowed them to walk on snow without sinking

>Dog sleds - 12 dogs pull loads of fur across great distance to market.

>Sleds - wood was strapped together using natural materials.

Fur Traders

>Fur traders transferred loads onto larger canoes when they reached the central point. They transported it to Montreal and Quebec City.

>Montreal canoes were 1-8 meters wide and 12 meters long.
