There were many beings much like humans to live on Earth before Homo Sapiens, or man who thinks. Homo Sapien is the scientific term for human.

The first human-like creatures to walk the Earth were Homo Habilis. Homo Habilis means "skillful man".

They lived from 2.3 million years ago to 1.8 million years ago.

They used fire for important things such as:

-Scaring away animals

-Cooking meat

-Giving them warmth

-Lighting the darkness

Neanderthals were named after the Neander river in Germany where the remains were first found. Neanderthals were great hunters. They used traps for small animals and pitfalls, or big ditches covered by twigs and leaves to make it look like ground, to capture big animals. According to experts, Neanderthals were also the first people to bury the dead. Neanderthals were builders. They made their own homes out of mammoth bones and animal skins.

The Cro-Magnons came after the Neanderthals. They were named after the rock shelter in France where their first remains were discovered in 1868. Archaeologists consider them the first modern human beings. Cro-Magnons were very skillful tool makers. They invented the burin, which represents a chisel. By using this tool, people could make their own tools and objects from antler, bone, ivory, shell, stone, and wood. Their more advanced tools made them better hunters. They made spear throwers out of antler and bone. Spear throwers allowed them to throw the spear faster and farther.

Cro-Magnons were also artists. They painted on cave walls with minerals that they crushed into a fine painting material. They also made statues out of ivory and bone, or they molded one from clay.

The Paleolithic Age

For food, they ate bone marrow, animal meat from dead carcasses, and things they gather like nuts, berries, and bird eggs.

The people started becoming more advanced. As a result, Homo Erectus, or man who walks upright, evolved.

Between 300,000 and 200,000 years ago came Homo Sapiens, or man who thinks. There were two types: Neanderthals to the right, and Cro-Magnon to the left.

Homo Erectus was the first to use fire to their advantage.

Homo Erectus used caves for shelter, but not permanently. They were always on the move in search for food.

The Cro-Magnons came after the Neanderthals. They are named after the rock shelter in France where their remains were first discovered in 1868. Archaeologists consider them the first modern human beings
