ExxonMobil Blunders

Strategies

  • Product development: drilling in the Artic, expand pipelines and chemical plants will contribute to emissions. Pulling back in alternative energy and trying to prove that natural gas is better than coal but it may be even worse than coal because Methane is better at trapping heat.

Incident: Need to focus on pipeline safety

  • Related diversification: Still investing in biofuel when it won’t be necessary until 2020

Incident: History of oil spills – Brooklyn, Alaskan oil spill (largest and disastrous oil spill in history before BP), New Hampshire pollution case and pipeline burst domestically. Not a good idea to do so offshore. Carrying Canada oil is more toxic.Even though prices of their oil are cheaper the damages are catastrophic.

  • Market Penetration in China

  • Nigerian Venture

  • Investments in solar power

  • Investments in biofuel
  • Market Penetration: Shell has the largest presence in Nigeria. Exxon Mobil looking into it will not be beneficial because Nigerians are protective over land

Incident: Corruption: Bribery in Kazakhstan where CEO at the time was put in prison. Damages from incident will cause less interest in investment for offshore drilling.

  • Unrelated Diversification: Diverse profile because they are big on crude oil. They need to focus on alternative energy sources before they decide to go offshore.

Incident: Chevron, Exxon Mobil and BP are among the 90 companies that contributed to 2/3 of greenhouse gas emission
