Elements of a Mystery Story

Mystery, Thriller, & Suspense

Plot of a Mystery

Usually includes one of the following:

  • A problem that needs to be solved
  • An event that cannot be explained
  • A secret
  • Something lost or missing
  • A crime that has been committed

Mystery: the main character is occupied in tracking down the truth about an event, usually a murder. If the protagonist is in any danger, it is usually moderate, and becomes a problem only as the detective approaches the truth.

Thriller: the protagonist is in danger from the outset.

Suspense: the main character may become aware of danger only gradually. In a mystery, the reader is exposed to the same information as the detective, but in a suspense story, the reader is aware of things unknown to the protagonist. The reader sees the bad guy plant the bomb, and then suffers the suspense of wondering when or if it will explode.

Characters

Red Herring

Distractions or false clues that lead a detective or reader off track making it more difficult to solve the mystery

Suspects: character(s) who may have committed the crime or caused the problem

Detectives/Investigators: character(s) trying to solve the mystery (also known as a sleuth)

Witnesses: character(s) who saw the crime being committed

Mystery Vocab

Motive: a reason that a person does something

  • can include anger, hatred, love, or greed

Clues: hints that help the detective and reader solve the mystery

  • can be objects that are founds, things people say, or things people do

Suspense: The reader does not know the solution while reading the mystery
