Consequences of American involvement in Cuba

Long term Effects:

Four Month long War

  • Cuba began to feel oppressed because America controlled most political affairs
  • America created two new naval bases on Cuba extending the military control in the Caribbean.
  • U.S. blocked Cuba's ability to have normal trade with Western countries.
  • The fight was between us and Spain
  • Us won the war
  • Because of this they became the dominant power in the Caribbean.
  • Spain granted independence to Cuba, but created a constitution.

  • Cuba was freed from the Spanish rule in 1898
  • Restored order of Cuban Government
  • America gained money from the Cuba sugar plantations
  • programs were created such as education, sanitation, and other public works
  • People of America thought it was a natural extension to US territory
  • A good military base location to control the Caribbean
  • economical potential for Cuba's productive sugar plantations
  • To reduce Spain's power
  • They thought it was a lot like how they were trying to gain independence so they helped
