JJ's Explain the Craze

I think that most people like Dystopian Novels because it has a little bit of everything in it. For example in Divergent it has some romance. This is when Tris starts to like Tobias. It has action like when tris storms the building to stop the simulation and Janien Mathews. It has mystery like durring the attack simulation Tris didn't know why the Dauntless was attacking inocient Abnegation members. It has adventure because they are always traveling to diffrent places and trying new things. Also people can sort of relate to the characters or books. They can also see the society in the modern day in the novels society.

Theme

In the book, Allegiant, by Veronica Roth we believe that the theme is to stand true to who you are against all odds. This is because when Tris found out that her Mom was from outside the fence (her mom came from the outside to help fix a problem in the experiment) Tris still stood true to who she was. She didn't just give in and want to immediately join the people that her mom did.Tris did go looking for answers though. This is staying true to who she was because Tris always wants to go out and get the answers that she needs. Tris always remains true to who she was even when Nita trys to rise up against the Bureau (the people who indirectly killed her mother). She told Tobias and Tris that she planned to destroy all of the memory serum but instead she tried to release the death serum on the Bureau."Tobias, are you in? Nita says...(Tobias) Yes. I say. Tris turns to me, her eyes wide, incredulous." (p.272) Tris listened to her gut which told her to not help Nita, even though Tobias joined Nita to bring down the Bureau. She also didn't give up when her Mom died. She went back to the Dauntless compound, stopped Jenine, and shut down her attack simulation. The same applies to Tobias. Tobias acts the same as when he was an instructor in Dauntless as when he is a leader in Dauntless (a short-lived leader). Tris and Tobias both stayed true to who they were no matter what the circumstances.

We also have hygiene regulations. Here at Dauntless we embrace soap and make shaving mandatory(sorry Mr.Lee) unlike our sociteys hippys(Amity). So, choose Dauntless and have the best times of your life! This slide was not meant to offend Mr.Lee in any way, we still love your beard.

Book Review

This book is amazing. We think Mrs.Roth's purpose was to create a book like no others and have it make sense at the same time. She did a great job of achieving that purpose. Her writing is powerful, beautiful and sometimes difficult to read. It is powerful because you feel like you are actually the characters. Her writing is beautiful because all of the words flow together and come to life. The writing is also difficult to read sometines because she has so much stuff going on. The book does have some weaknesses though. One weakness is that there is so much stuff going on. If there was not so much stuff going on, it would be easier to understand. Another weakness is that the book switches between characters. The two characters could be in completely different spots. It just confuses us sometimes. We think this book was amazing. It is a superb work of modern literature.

This book didn't affect us too much. It did change out ideas a little bit.One major idea that this book changed was that Tobias is Divergent. He is not. Tobias is just a genetically damaged person that has the abilities of a Divergent or genetically healed person. We would recommend this book to everyone. It is a very entainering read.

Logan's Faction Organizer

The Dauntless are the security people. They monitor all the other factions through security cameras. The Dauntless also patrol the fence to keep threats outside or so they think. They actually are keeping people inside the fence. They also have very good chocolate cake. Their serum is a mind deciveing serum. It makes a person's worst fears become real.

The Candor are honest to a fault. Their honesty makes them cruel because they do not pull their punches. They just say what is on their mind. The Candor are the judges of the city. TheIr serum is a truth serum. Any person under it's influence can not lie. Tris is the only known person able to resist it.

The Abnegation are selfless. They are trained to forget themselves and help better everyone else. The Abnegation would be that guy who gives up his seat on the bus for you without a second thought. Their serum is a memory erase serum. That serum targets specifec parts of a person's brain and then erases it.

The Amity are peaceful and fun-loving. They are the farmers. The Amity are also the only faction allowed to go outside the fence because that is where the farmland is. They are also responsible to adminster Abnegation's serum on any Dauntless guards that go outside the boundaries. Their own serum is the peace serum. It makes a person calm and peaceful.

The Erudite value intelligence more than anything. They are the teachers, scientists and engineers in the city. Their serum is the death serum. It makes anyone who comes into contact with it die by releasing a type of gas that justs stops mind functions. Again, Tris is the only one able to beat it.

Logan's physical symbol

My physical symbol is a model of genes. Genes play a very important role in Allegiant. Their whole life has been an experiment to fix damaged genes. You also learn that Tobias has damaged genes. Another role that genes play is that the Divergent are the people with fixed genes. Fixed genes also mean you don't fit into one catergory. Your brain can switch between personalities and resist most serums. Tris is the most powerful Divergent to ever live. This means that her genes are really fixed, maybe even better than most peoples.That is why I picked genes as my physical symbol.

Tris Analysis

We believe that Tris is bull-headed, stubborn and only does what she wants when she wants to. She is strong and compassionate about her friends (especially for Tobias). On the inside, she is sometimes insecure and needs alot of help. Her parents dying didn't help matters. She has never needed Tobias more than she does now. She also has very strong willpower. The power needed to resist simulations. We gathered that she has a strong willpower when she broke into the weapon vaults. The vaults are protected by the death serum. "An invisible thread tugs me toward sleep, but I want to be awake. It is important that I want to be awake. I imagine that wanting, that desire, burning in my chest like a flame" (pg.467) She also does what she thinks is right or necessary. When she was going to save Jeniene Matthews from Tori, Tris didn't care about the consequences . She just thought it was necessary. Also, Tris will not change her mind no matter what someone says.An example is when Nita tries to persuade Tobias and her to help overthrow the Bureau. Tobias said yes and Tris said no. "I can't believe you, she said. She's lying. Why can't you see that?" (pg.272)

Logan's Utopia Society

My utopian society would be called Peace town. Peace town would be about the size of Washington D.C. Washington D.C is 68.3 square miles . Tne city would have a giant park in the middle of the town that has walking trails, places to have a picnic and space to play a game of football. The town hall is right in the middle of the park. Ringing the park would be movie theaters, restratuants, grocery stores and other nesseties like that. Fast food places and jails are non-exsitent. In between the edge of town would be the residental section. The residental section would have only homes, not apartment buildings. There would also be bike pumps and bike holders at regular intervals. The only mode of transportation would be by bike. Some laws would be do your part in society, never make anyone feel like they are rejected and most important do NOT steal. The punishments differ greatly. There is no jail but there are other means. One other mean is to dock their salary for a week. Another way is to lock up their bike so they have to walk everywhere. The most svere punishment is getting kicked out of Peace Town. That will only happen if they get repeated offenses or if they destroy other people's property. The citizens of Peace town have a part in society. Their parts are don't litter, don't make trouble for anyone else and go to work happy. Some jobs are policemen, firefighters, and medics. Peace town also has busisness managers, postmen, and clerks. One job they do not have is a jailhouse manager or any other job that a prison provides. Every kid is expected to go to school until they are twenty-four. Skipping college is not an option, it will get kicked out of Peace Town. Peace town would be run by a council of seven people. Those seven people then have up to five advisors. The townspeople then have the power to veto their decision and make a completly new one. One law or change takes up to about seven days to pass all the steps of the process. The people in Peace Town are all healthy and fit. They only eat meat, nuts, fruits and vegetables. For entertainment the people of Peace Town play sports, watch movies and take walks with their friends and family. Video games are allowed only an hour and a half a day. If you try to succed that amount of time your game console will shut itself down automatically. A second offense will allow you only a hour a day. A third offense will get your game console taken anyway for a week. We also have a very strong military. 80% of the population is in it. They all of different jobs in peacetime. Our military members are trained to where they could shoot the eyebrows off a fly a mile away while carring 200 pounds and are under fire at the same time. Our snipers could shoot the eyebrows off a fly three miles away. Our tanks can also withstand direct rocket hits. Our troop transports can withstand more. We also have a satellite weapons platform. It fires giant lasers onto a target the size of a penny. It has an miss range of three feet in any diameter. That is my utopia society.

Summary

Summary

At the end of the book Insurgent, Tris and Tobias release a video that changes the city forever. Cara and Christina helped Tris and Tobias relaase the video.The video lets you know that their whole life has been an experiment and that the original people in the experiment came voluntarily. The video also tells you that once the population of Divergent's are high then they should come outside and help the world recover from the Purity War. "The name you should give those people is Divergent. Once they become abundant among you, your leaders should give the command for Amity to unlock the gate forever, so that you may emerge from your isolation." (pg.524 of Insurgent) "I am about to join your number. Like the rest of you, I will voluntarily forget my name, my family, and my home." (p.524 of Insurgent)

At the beginning of the book Allegiant, Tris, Cara and Christina are in a cell in Erudite Headquarters. They were taken captive by the factionless after the revolt that brought down the factions. Tris has a trial about her part in the revolt. Tris tells such a convincing lie that Cara and Christina get off scotch free. Soon afterwards, the factionless do a demonstration. The demonstration is Edward trying to destroy the faction choosing bowls. An old Erudite man tries to stop him and ends up dead. Edward gets shot in the frantic choas that happens and ends up dieing from the gunshot wounds. Tris ends up have a run in with the Allegiant (people who rebel against no factions). They want her to go to one of their secret meetings. At the meeting Tris finds out that Johanna Reyes (former Amity leader) and Cara rule the Allegiant. They also make plans for leaving the city so they can accomplish what they are supposed to do."Cara and Johanna are the leaders of the Allegiant?...and to send some of our number outside the city..." (p.61) Tobias saves Caleb from getting killed by bring him with them outside the fence. Right as they are abut to escape, the factionless spring an ambush on them. Only Tori does not make it. "Tori's gone...I saw it happen." (p.94) Tobias ends up getting shot in that same ambush, but only gets an arm wound. They also learn that every faction has a serum. "...Dauntless serum gives hallucinated realities, Candor's gives the truth, Amity's gives peace, Erudite's gives death,... and Abnegation's resets memory" (p.99)

Their little group finds the world beyond the city full of roads and dark buildings. They run into a group of people sent by the Bureau. Amar is with them. Amar was Tobias's initiation instructor, who is supposed to be dead. When they get to the Bureau, the group sees and hears so much stuff that they don't understand. They get a welcome talk about why they were put into an experiment. They were put into the experiment to fix a problem with genes. That problem resulted from the actions of trying to fix human's un-desirable qualities. Those people ended up damage or missing a part of their soul. Tris also finds out that her mother came from this place to fix a problem in the experiment. Tris also gets a journal that her mom had when she was younger. Later that day TRis and Tobias go for some genetic testing. They discover that Tobias is not actually Divergent. He just has an extremly rare ability to manipulate simulations. "...that you are not Divergent. Your genes are still damaged..." (p.175) Tobias also watches Marcus's verdict. MARCus ends up getting sent outside the city instead of being excuted.

Tris does end up giving the journal to Caleb after she finished it. Tris and Caleb both find out that the women in the video (their ancestor) worked with the Bureau. Indeed, she was one of the experiment designers. Nita tells him how the Bureau treats GD's like him and then she takes him out to the fringe. At the fringe, they meet Rafi and Mary. "Mary and Rafi lead the midwest branch of the GD rebel group." (p.246) He ends up telling Tris even though Nita told him not too. Tris and Tobias both go to what Nita wanted to how Tobias. She wanted to show him pictures of suffering that happened even when there wasn't genetic damage. Nita also shows Tris and Tobias the attack simulation that caused the whole mess in the first place. She has access to it because the Bureau gave it to the Erudite. The day after that meeting Tris lets Matthew in the plan and he sees right through it. He thinks they are going after the death serum instead of the memory serum. As they run to go tell David,the plan goes off. Tris ends up saving the whole compound and David. Uriah gets hurt by a diversionary explosion. "...and Uriah's body is among them, a limp projectile." (p.282)

Tris goes to talk to Tobias. Tells him that Uriah is badly hurt and might not wake back up. She also tells him that she is disgusted with him and might not be able to look at him the same way again. Since Tris saved Daid from the GD's, he offers her a job. That job is to part of his group of advisors. Later, all the people from the city plus Matthew decide they have to help Nita's cause expect in a better, more safe way. Tris goes out to the fringe as training for her new job as advisor. As usual she ends up having to save someone. This time it is George. "...a tall,gangly boy has a gun pointed at George." (p.351) In the city, the Allegiant finally attack. They have formed an armed army and storm the Factionless headquarters. Also, Tris learns that Tobias's mother has discovered a new weapon to use against the Allegiant. A hidden stash of Erudite's death serum. When Tris goes to her first council meeting, she learns that are planning to reset the memories of everyone in every experiment by releasing the memory serum on their population's. Once Tris tells her friends about it, she gets an idea."Reset the Bureau, and reprogram them without the propaganda, without the disdain for GD's." (p.382)

They also decide to go back into the city and inoculate their family against the memory serum if they fail. At a later meeting, Caleb is the one chosen to break into the Weapons Lab. Tobias volunteers tot each him the finer points of gun usage and aiming. Tris attends another council meeting which is just more of the same stuff, except more detailed. Some of their group leaves for the city and some stay at the compound. Along the way, Tobias is wondering which of his parents he should go to, to help avoid civil war. Christine helps him by sliting the tires on the truck so he can "go get a new truck." At the compound Tris, Caleb and Matthew start the attack. "...I watch Matthew lift the gun over his head and fire straight up, at one of the glass panel above him." (p.453) TRis also decides to go and set off the death serum instead of Caleb. In the city, Tobias gets to where is mother is and gives her the ultimate choice. Stop this war and have your son back or don't stop this war and don't have your son back. His mother choses to stop the war and have her son back. Back at the compound, Tris comes into contact with the airborne death serum. Tris somehow survives the death serum and comes into contact with David. David shoots her three times but too late. Tris had accomplished the mission and released the truth serum. Those three shots ended Tris's life. "This time I know it's my mother's hand, drawing me into her arms. And I go gladly into her embrace." (p.476) Back at the city, Tobias and his mother get peace going with the Allegiant. After that, Tobias goes to tell Zeke and Uriah's mother about Uriah's condition. hh

JJ's Faction Organizer

Erudite is the Faction with all of the knowledge in the society. They also prefect all of the serums in the society. They really have the power. Their serum is death serum.

Dauntless is the faction with all of the excitement. They are the law inforcement of the city and where the main charactor lives. They are responsible for dealing with uprisings and violence. They have a fear simulation serum.

Amity are the peacefull farmer hippys. They live outside of the fence and grow all of the crops for the city. They also poison their bread against peoples will and behind the peoples backs to make people happy so they dont leave. Their serum is to make people happy.

Candor are the brutialy honest. They controll all of the citys Judicial syste. They controlll the fates of the people. Their serum is an honesty serum.

Abnegation are the selfless. They give food to the factionless, live in poverty and help anyone in need. They also controll the goverment. Their serum is a memory loss serum.

JJ's Physical Symbol

I brought in this wooden plane because a plane plays a big role in the book Allegiant. This is a big part because when Tris found the Berau she didn't know what was outside the city. Tris described the plane as,"It was like a big metal bird with huge wings."(pg.216) When she got on the plane she saw all of the other experiments and the fringe. While this was happening Tobias was meeting with Nita about the G.D.'s overthrowing the G.P.'s(pg.213). This a turning point in the book because it starts the idea of rebillion against the Berau.

Come to Amity. We love peace, harmony and song! If you crave peace and quiet join us. Our bread is also amazing. It has a slight hint of honey and spice. Our way of life is very important. Without us our beloved city would be worst for wear. In case you didn't know we are the hard-working farmers who make sure there is food on your plate. All day we sing, play instrutments and just enjoy life.

Tris and Nita Comparison

Tris and Nita are two different types of people. They each have their own version of street smarts. Nita knows how to fit into the fringe (where the GD's live without government control). Tris knows how to fit into the city experiments. They both like Tobias in a way. Nita is the kind of person that appears in a book but doesn't really last long enough for you to get to know her. Tris, on the other hand, is in a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship with Tobias. Both girls also have contrasts in their personalities. They are different because Nita tries to do everything in secret, so no one thinks badly of her. When she took Tobias to the fringe, she told him not to tell anyone, not even Tris. "If you tell her, you will be depriving her of the choice I'm giving you now" (pg.237). Tris on the other hand, doesn't care what anyone thinks of her. Tris just goes out and acts without worrying what other people think.They both do rash, implusive acts that scare people to death. Those are the similarities and differences between Tris and Nita.
