a. Describe the role of the cattle trails in the late 19th century; include the Black Cowboys of Texas, the Great Western Cattle Trail, and the Chisholm Trail.

The assessments line up with the standards because the drawings in the sand show the cattle trails and big ideas from the turn of the century. Also because the students will have to write and reflect in their journal about their activity and the Coolies book (immigration).

Students were to work together and create images in the provided sand within 2 minutes.

Wrapping up
Afterwards students were asked to write in their journals why they drew the pictures in the sand the way they did, what kind of communication it took, and if working together was hard.
