William Lovett created a petition for more government involvement, better working conditions, and secret voting. His petition was rejected three times by parliament when the Chartists finally gave up. 30 years after the 3rd petition was rejected, their demands started being implemented.
The petition was made because they wanted to reform the amount of government involvement within private businesses, and change the labour laws for the working class. They also rejected not having the ability to vote in private. An example of this would be some of the Chartists six demands that they presented to Parliament.

Perspectives on Ideology textbook
This political movement was drafted in 1838 at the start of the industrial revolution, by William Lovett; a british activist. He started this movement to allow people of the working class to have the rights they deserved. Another reason why he wanted these rights was to abolish the elite government.
Originally their three attempts at approaching parliament were not successful, although around 30 years later a few of the demands the Chartists had were implemented into the Reform Act, and are now all in effect in modern society. This movement changed the government`s involvement today.
1. Votes for all men
2. Equal Electoral districts
3. Abolition of the act that requires Members of Parliament to own property
4. Payment for M.P.s
5. Annual general elections
6. The secret ballot
William Lovett presented a petition to parliament with 1.25 million signatures on it which was rejected by a vote of 235 to 46. Chartist leaders threatened to call a general strike which then caused them to be arrested and imprisoned in Newport, Wales. Supporters marched on the prison demanding the release of the leaders. Troops then opened fire killing 24 people and wounding 40. In 1842 a document with 3 million signatures on it was rejected, and again in 1848 a 3rd petition was rejected which then ended the movement so chartists could channel their efforts into socialists movements.
