Birth and Death

  • Born: Actual date unknown; estimated to be in 1459 or earlier, in Haut-Wignes, France.

  • Death: October 30, 1522 in Saint-Quentin, France
  • At this time, Mouton was made the principal composer for the French court.
  • For the rest of his life, he was working for the court by writing music for different state occasions such as weddings, coronations, papal elections, births and deaths.

His life

  • He was made a priest around this time and was then in charge of the choirboys at the cathedral in Amiens in 1500.
  • In 1501, he moved to Grenoble to teach other choirboys but left the next year. It was assumed he entered the service of Queen Anne of Brittany. In 1509 he was granted a position in Grenoble again.
  • His full name is Jean de Hollingue.
  • It's unsure how he started but it's assumed he began as a singer and a teacher at the collegiate church in Saint Omer.
  • He then moved to Nesle in 1477 and later in 1483 was made the maitre de chapelle.

(A maitre de chapelle is a person in charge of teaching and hearing music of Christian religious context.)

  • Not all of his music survived but those that did are 9 Magnificat settings, 15 masses, 20 chansons, and over 100 motets.
  • A well known motet of his is Christus vincet. It was played during the election of Leo X as pope in 1513. Leo liked his music and awarded him an honorary title for the occasion.
