The HBCU vs. The PWI

  • According to the National Center for Education Statistics, In 2011, 39% of black students in the US applied to and enrolled at public PWIs & 18.8% applied to and enrolled at private PWIs.

  • Only 10.6% of black students, in 2011, applied to and enrolled at an HBCU.

Hypothesis

The HBCU

Reasons students stray away

  • According to USA Today, Historically Black Colleges only graduate 20% of black students who earn undergraduate degrees in the United States.
  • There are 51 public institutions & 49 private institutions, but 106 HBCUS in total.
  • 4 year graduation rates
  • "lack of diversity"
  • don't believe that they will be afforded the same amount of opportunities at an HBCU that they will at a PWI.

Black students in the United States or provinces of the United States will fail to apply or attend Historically Black Colleges and/or Universities when given the option to attend a Predominately White Institution.

Why this topic?

Conclusion

  • There are an excessive amount of articles that question whether a 4.0 GPA at a HBCU serves to be equivalent to a 4.0 at a PWI.
  • As a black student who will be attending an HBCU, I was interested to find out how many other black students in the United States applied to or attend an HBCU each year vs. the amount that apply to or attend a PWI.
  • Based on statistics shown by the National Center for Education Statistics, the percentage of students who apply to HBCUS decrease every year.
  • Although there is a decrease, there is often a spike in application when there is a controversial event dealing with black people. Ex: Howard University received twice as many applications this year than in previous years.
