X Marks the Spot Where the Hunley Sank

After the Famous Civil War submarine, The Hunley, destroyed the USS Housatanic, it had sunk to the depths of the ocean for 130 years until it was discovered in 1995. Then in 2000 once The Hunley had been discovered, a group of people were set out to regain the submarie and clean it up of all the 130 years worth of damage.

This event is not important to the Civil War but important to the modern day society. The only knowledge we had of the Hunley before 2000 was only the schematics and blueprints now we have the actual submarine to examine.

Louisiana Purchase

of 1803

The Louisiana colony/territory was ruled by the French but due to their recent revolution, they needed money. Tomas Jefferson purchased the Louisiana territory from France in 1803 in order to further colonize the continent. The purchase nearly doubled the size of the U.S.A.

This was important to the upbringing of the civil war because it had left territory open for states to form so that events leading up to the civil war, like the Kansas-Nebraska act could happen.

Letter M Missouri Compromise

In 1819, Missouri wanted to become a slave state but this would upset the representation balance. In order to solve this problem Missouri entered slavery with Maine as a free state. Congress had drawn an imaginary line at 36 degrees North lattitude on Missouri's southern border. Any state North had to be a free state, any state south could be either a free or slave state.

This had helped cause the Civil War because it helped contribute to the growth of events like the Kansas-Nebraska act

Emancipation Proclamation

The Kansas-Nebraska Act was used to let Kansas to become a state by popular sovereignty even though it was above the Missouri Compromise line dictating that it should be a free state.

Popular Sovereignty had to be a choice because

Nebraska had become a free state, an addition of another free state would upset the balance of representation of free and slave states in Congress.

The way that this event affected the Civil War was that it had been one of the events that led up to the actual war. Because Kansas was allowed to vote to be either a free state or a slave state this created competition for control of the state. Southerners brought guns to the voting polls to intimidate others to vote for a slave state

"The Kansas-Nebraska Act." Ushistory.org. Independence Hall Association, n.d. Web. 15 Feb. 2016. <http://www.ushistory.org/us/31a.asp>.

The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by president Abraham Lincoln stating that "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states are, and henceforward shall be free."

This is important to the Civil War and because this encourage and gives high morals to slaves so they could run away, rebel, or join the Union.
