CREMATION

On average, many SK's have chosen to be buried by cremation instead of burial.

As of 2014, the number was up to 79% of funerals. Cities like Tongyeong up to 95%.

Such that people travel far to find crematoriums that have urn space.

This drastic shift in the last two decades or so has bee such that individuals in their 40's have either never seen a burial or saw their last one when they were little.

Cremation and Burial.

  • Introduction.

Neo-Confucianism.

According to Chung-Won Park, before the 1990's most of the time when people resorted to cremation, they were either poor or a 'bad death' like suicide or death of the young, had occurred. Not even used in the Korean War.

S.Korean Suicide rates have been a cause for concern the past decade or so.

Findings.

17.8% (1991) to 33% (2000) to 42.5% (2002)

Endorsement

1982 - Law was passed requiring hospitals with >100 patients to have a mortuary.

1993 & 1997 - Government policy to encourage cremation because of size was rejected by NA, Confucians and public.

1998 - Loss of graves due to heavy rains and the cremation of Chaebol SK owner Jong Hyun-Choi might have prompted a YES! on the agreement (MEDIA).

2001 - Law revised so that anyone buried

had to be dug up after 60 years.

+ Christianity.

Space

One way to show filial piety - Geomancy

"Auspicious environment" for a good burial place will bless future generations.

Good Burial grounds were hard to find,

Burial land is expensive for purchase,

Cremation is subsidized and burial only for Koreans who left the country at a certain time or for veterans,

There is more at stake -

  • Endorsement,
  • Space,
  • Government Project,
  • Policies & Laws,
  • Suicide rates,
  • Neo-Confucianism & good of the nation,
  • Christianity, etc.

It is hard for people to perform

  • How has cremation come to be so prevalent in SK?
  • What role does Neo-Confucianism play in burial rites?
  • What might this mean for the future of religion and economy in SK?
