Dynamic equivalence

Eugene Nida

It cares about:

He looked for balance between comprehension in the original context and the one in the target language.

  • In favor of exegesis (interpreting by the original context).
  • Against hermeneutics (interpreting using the current context).

It doesn't consist on translation word by word, instead of that it is about creating the closest possible equivalent in the target language, in meaning as in style.

Translation is not a separate science, it is related with other disciplines.

Using a "lingua franca" as a linguistic filter.

  • Appellate function
  • Expressive function
  • Imperative function

It is against formal translation theory.

The translated message has to produce the same response in the receptor as the original message produced to the native receptors.

Process of translation: analysis, transference, restructuring and check (evaluation).

There is not a complete translation theory.

The response is given by the level of comprehension of the text.
