Obese children and youth who require medical attention to help with the issue is shown to have adverse depression issues as well as lower quality of life. (Daniels, 2009).

Future Issues

Being a overweight kindergarten may be said to be a phase of baby fat, but chances of being an overweight adult is 4 times more likely (Chai, 2014).

12% of kids who entered kindergarten were considered overweight, 14% were considered obese. By Grade 8, 17% of those children were overweight and 20.8% were obese, over half were the kindergarteners (Chai, 2014).

Contributors to Childhood Obesity

Causes

Statistics

  • Contributors to poor health include poverty, lack of safe and affordable housing, inadequate access to good food, being socially marginalized and faring poorly in range of determinants (Barnes, 2012).

Health Issues relating to Obesity in Children

  • High blood pressure, sleep apnea, high cholesterol, Type 2 Diabetes and joint problems (Curbing Childhood Obesity, 2012).
  • Higher prevalence of child being overweight as an adult (Curbing Childhood Obesity, 2012).

Sedentary Behaviors in School age children

  • Children and Youth get approximately 7 hours and 48minutes a day of screen time (Sedentary Behaviors, 2009-2010)
  • Only 19% of youth aged 10-16 met Canadian Sedentary Behaviors Guidelines (Sedentary Behaviors, 2009-2010)
  • Largest amount of screen time is from television (Sedentary Behaviors, 2009-2010)

Canadian Childhood Obesity

Nearly 1/3 of children in Canada( close to 1 million) in 2009-2011 were obese according to the Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS) (1) 27.1% of Youth aged 12-17 self reported BMI of obese or overweight. (Manson, 2013)

Past Childhood Obesity

In 1978-1979, childhood obesity was at 6.3% where as in 2004 it was 12.7%. (Manson, 2013)
