Greek life: Hazing

TRUE

True or False?

  • Hazing is not necessary for an initiation experience to be challenging and unique.

What is hazing?

FALSE

True or False

  • If someone agrees to participate in an activity, it can't be considered hazing.
  • Hazing only exists in fraternities and sororities.

During the investigation the following was found:

Scenario

  • Bruises were found on the bodies of all prospective members.
  • 2 members had less than a 2.5 GPA.
  • 1 member was arrested earlier for stealing in Wal-mart.
  • Evidence of old members of the organization assaulted the students

During the fall semester at the University of Lehigh, there were interest meetings held for the Council of Greek Lettered organizations. (CGLO) The impending Membership Intake Processes(MIP) brought much excitement to the campus life and in particular to the Student Government Association.

At the conclusion of the interest meetings, the organizations that decided to hold MIP, turned in their required paperwork and were granted permission to bring in new members.

As the semester progressed the Director of Greek Affairs received a phone call from the Health Center on campus. The staff of the health center expressed concern that several students who were examined might be involved in hazing activity. When the situation was investigated it was found that students were illegally pledging to gain membership into the Iota Alpha Omega Kappa community service Fraternity/Sorority.

How could we as Student Leaders develop an intervention process

Effects of Hazing

Physical effects

  • death
  • hospitalized
  • brain injuries

Psychological effects

  • depression
  • shame
  • suicide

Some types of hazing:

  • beating, paddling
  • water intoxication
  • name calling
  • requiring new members/rookies to refer to other members with titles.
  • socially isolating new members/rookies.
  • endure extreme weather conditions
  • perform law breaking tasks

Addressing old members pledging the new members

How we will promote the images of fraternities and sororities on the campus

  • Set up a step by step awareness program that will encourage Greek organizations to use other forms of intake apart from hazing
  • eg. (required to attend meetings that teach individuals about the organization; taking tests that proves that information is retained)
  • Emphasize the negative effects that hazing causes to its victims in the long run
  • Emphasize the idea of leadership and being a role model (eg. If students pledging an organization look up to you, why would you want to endanger them?)
  • It's 2016! There are more effective ways to reach people than making them feel inferior.
  • Setting up community service event across the campus hosted by fraternities and sororities
  • Have specific members from each organization speak on hazing on behalf of his/her organization

How we would address the students involved

  • Set up one on one meetings with these students to subtract the possibility of outside influences
  • Make them feel comfortable and establish a sense of security
