They are one of the most populous tribes in the highlands, and are found spread out through the highlands. The Dani are one of the most well-known ethnic groups in Papua, due to the relatively numerous tourists who visit the Baliem Valley area where they predominate.

Why do they do these ritual ?

The tribe believes that cutting of part of their fingers symbolizes sorrow and pain of losing a loved one. They will also cut off an ear for the more pain that is caused. It is also has been interpreted as unity, strength in family, and harmony.

Where does the Ikipalin take place ?

The Dani tribe resides this ritual in an extremely remote area of Papua Province in a town named Wamena.

There's not an exact date when the tribe started this petculiar mourning ritual, but the act of cutting off one's own finger is done after the loved one is dead.

Its mostly the Dani women in the Dani tribe , but Dani men also take part in this tradition.

Relation to other cultures?

In the United States a way of mourning after a loved one dies is maybe planning a funeral. In Japan, the Yakuza family will remove of finger of the agent who failed a mission, bringing great shame. Well, in Indonesia another way of mourning is cutting off a part of your finger.
