History of O.T.
1930s - Occupational therapy became more closely aligned and identified with organized medicine, which led to the beginning of a more scientific approach.
1942-1960 Referred to as the 'rehabilitation movement, OT's were called to organize and run rehabilitation programs for veterans.
Medical advances extended the lives of people who would have previously died. Including spinal injury, traumatic brain injury and cerebral palsy.
What is Occupational
Therapy?
1910s - First practitioners in OT profession, called reconstructive aides, worked during World War I to rehabilitate disabled soldiers and civilian patients. They addressed the need of these soldiers for care beyond wound repair. The need to have something useful to do, and thus recapture purpose in their lives.
Levels of OT Practitioner
2000s - Occupational Therapists develop language and constructs to more accurately and fully explain what they do that is unique from other health disciplines. OT returns to the roots of participation in occupation as a focus of the profession.
