Revolution!

LOYALISTS were Colonials that remained loyal to England.

Should they have been punished? If not, why? If so, how?

Discuss: How do you think America won?

The CONTINENTAL ARMY was mostly drawn from local militias. They were poorly organized, underfunded, and lacked military discipline.

French ships played a key role in the final victory at Yorktown...and bankrupted the Bourbon Monarchy. Their revolution would follow soon.

America was also very far away. It took a month to communicate with home.

America was a much smaller theater in a long war between England and France. To undermine England's position in the world, France gave support to the revolutionaries.

The terrain was rough. The Revolutionaries knew it well, but the British fumbled through dense forests and extreme temperatures.

It mostly came down to TWO factors: Geography and Allies

At the time of the Revolution, the British Empire was the most powerful nation on Earth. It easily had the world's most powerful navy and a hardened, disciplined land force, infamously known as Red Coats. Their empire spanned the globe.

The Other Debate

This was ONE the arguments.

The debate between FEDERALISTS and the ANTI-FEDERALISTS would go on to create an entirely new form of government.

Instead, they came up with something radically new.

Discuss: What problems might come having overpowered state governments?

Every colony sent a representative to Philadelphia to revise the ARTICLES OF CONFEDERATION.

With battlefield victory secure, the Colonists now had to forge a new nation. They created a government with a weak central government and very powerful state governments.

It was an absolute failure.

Exit question: Is the willingness to COMPROMISE a sign of strength or weakness in a leader?

Do you think we need a strong federal government, withthe power to regulate states or...

We need strong state governments that can keep their independence when dealing with the Federal Government

Nonsense! The congress should be very large, with one man representing relatively few. This will allow men from all walks of life to serve, and to participate in the government.

The blacksmith should be congressman too, as all men should have the right to have their INTERESTS represented!

How would you solve this problem?

The government is best run by those who don't have a personal interest in their laws. The wealthiest of us, who have the time and expertise to dedicate, should run the government. Imagine if a blacksmith became a congressman. He'd only make laws to benefit blacksmiths!

For this reason, the congress should be small. One man should represent many.

Mini Debate!

Remember...ACE!
