Building Overview
Existing Brick Facade
Brick Layering Anchored to Steel Frame
Panelised Curtain Wall
- Curvilinear brick facade was quite the engineering achievement
- Relies on mechanical ventilation
- Frank Gehry pushed the boundaries of architectural form
- Location: University of Technology, Sydney - UTS Business School
- Completed 2014
- 14 Levels (11 Occupied + 1 Basement + 1 Plant + 1 Rooftop
- Architect: Frank Gehry
Brick Layering Anchored to Steel Frame
- Use of undulated bricks: created texture, aids in offsetting rain
Movement Joint Strategy
- High-performance glazing used throughout
- Used custom design 'groove & bolt system'
- Many challenges throughout the construction process
- MJs face-sealed on-site & supported on each transom
- Majority of sun enters the building in the afternoon
- Five types of custom made bricks
Inner steel frame which
supports brick cladding
- Current facades are the best solution for this project due to cost of construction & quality control
- Shading devices mounted indoors to provide daylight control
Waterproofing
Brick-tie arrangement for near vertical facades (left) & steeper facades (right)
- Shading from nearby buildings
- Sealants used between panels
Movement Joint Strategy
SWOT Analysis
- Bricks are porous: expand with moisture
- MJs essential to avoid cracking, detachment or water ingress
- Panels pressure equalized
- Facilitate brick expansion, MJs located vertically & horizontally
- Insulation: reduces heat transfer from building envelope
- Supported on a floor by floor basis
Waterproofing
- Gutter system & downpipes
- Curving facade makes waterproofing & water drainage a critical issue
- Window boxes were face-sealed
- Capping used on window frames & glass roofs
