  • x-rays, ultrasounds, MRI or CT scan may be necessary to confirm diagnosis

Etiology

Anatomy

Plan of care

  • commonly injured ligaments: anterior tibiofibular ligament, posterior tibiofibular ligament, and lateral collateral ligament complex

Prognosis

  • inversion is the most common, it occurs when the ankle rolls outward and the foot turns inward resulting in stretching and tearing ligaments on the outside
  • eversion occurs when the ankle rolls inward and the foot turns outward resulting in damaged ligaments in the outside of the ankle
  • ice and elevation to reduce inflammation
  • possible brace or cast to reduce motion
  • possible use of crutches
  • most sprains heal without complications
  • recovery time depends on the severity of the sprain
  • exercise is recommended once swelling of the ankle goes down

Medication
