Love is comprised of three key components; commitment, passion, and intimacy.

At different times in our romantic lives, we display varying levels of these three components. Because there are different ways to express these, in varying degrees, there are 6 different styles of loving.

These 6 styles have been divided into primary and secondary styles. Primary: Eros, Storge, and Ludus. Secondary: Agape, Pragma, and Mania.

Eros

This love is powerful and passionate. Erotics experience love intensely, dramatically, and instantly. These people are often attracted sexually, spiritually, intellectually, or emotionally.

Mania

Agape

Mania comes from the Greek term for madness; Mancis, often doubtful of their partners love, devise tests and games in order to evaluate their partner's level of commitment. Manics often experience emotional extremes.

This love is unconditional. The term agape comes from the idea that us as humans should love one another without expectation of personal gain or return.

What is love?

Love is what happens in a committed romantic relationship. This means that the partners have agreed to be primary and continuing parts of each others lives.

Ludus

Storge

This love is comfortable and easy-going. Storgic love is based on friendship and compatibility in common interests, values, and life goals. This love tends to develop gradually over time.

This love is play and taken as a game. Ludics take love to be an adventure, full of scheming, challenges, puzzles, and fun. Love is not taken seriously. Unlike the others, the goal is not commitment. Ludics enjoy falling in love over and over.

Pragma

This love is practical and often viewed as cold. Pragmatics have clear criteria for their partners. Practical considerations must be met in order for a pragmatic to endure commitment.
