Depression Campaign
Introduction
- To identify current theories and concepts used in communicating mental health issues.
- To investigate the applied communication theories used in the "Get Through" Depression Campaign and determine the effectiveness of these to target and help male victims of depression in New Zealand.
- To develop recommendations for furthur Depression Campaigns by highlighting key opportunities that could have been furthur developed in the "Get Through" Depression Campaign.

- One in six New Zealanders will experience a major depressive disorder at some stage in their life.
- On the 10th Oct, 2006 it was announced that Sir John Kirwan would front New Zealand’s national campaign for depression awareness.
- Approx. 500 New Zealanders die by suicide each year, and up to 90 per cent of which can be attributed to depression (NZ Herald, 2006).
- The main goal of the campaign is to inform those in the community that, although it is sometimes hard to discern, mental depression exists.

Results
- Increased response rate from the second survey.
- 62% of people surveyed had discussed the advert.
- 6% increase in amount of people willing to talk about their depression to someone else.
- Large increase in the number of males using the freephone resource after viewing adverts.

and alleviate the stigma surrounding depression for
men between 25 and 44 in New Zealand.
