1930's Inventions

  • FM Radio- George Brown
  • Drive-In-Movies- Richard M. Hollingshead
  • Frozen Food- Clarence Birdseye
  • Chocolate Chip- Ruth Wakefield
  • Chocolate Chip Cookie- Ruth Wakefield
  • Zippo Lighter- George Blaisdell & Gimera
  • Trampoline- George Nissen & Larry Griswold
  • Tampon- Tampax (Dr. Haas)
  • The 1930's produced some of the best radio programs thanks to FM radio.
  • FM radio helped start the Golden Age of both cinema & radio.
  • Radio's were so important to people that they would give up their ice boxes before giving up their radio.
  • At the end of the decade, nearly 80% of every family had a radio in their home.

Drive-In-Movies

  • The line wasn't strictly vegetables.
  • It included, 18 cuts of meat, spinach, peas, fruits, berries, fish fillets, and blue point oysters.
  • They became popular in World War 2 because they were made of cardboard and available resources.

Chocolate Chip and Chocolate Chip Cookie

  • The very first drive-in-movie opened on June 6, 1933.
  • The construction of the drive-in-movie started May 19, 1933.
  • It took 3 weeks to build.
  • The first one was opened in Camden, New Jersey.
  • Richard H., Willie Warren Smith, Edward Ellis, and Oliver Willets all took part in this $30,000 project.
  • The chocolate chip and the chocolate chip cookie were accidentally invented.
  • First chocolate chip cookie was called the Toll House Crunch Cookie.
  • Ruth made an agreement with Nestle. They would print the recipe on the back of their package, and she would get a life supply of Nestle chocolate.

Tampons

Zippo Lighter

  • The Tampax company produced tampons first.
  • Dr Earle Cleveland Haas, a general practioner thought of taking the tampon before improvisation.
  • His inspiration came from his wife and female patients who had to put up with the bulky external pads.
  • The very first Tampon was made in Dr. Haas' basement.
  • Gimera was actually the LEAD inventor when it came to the making of the Zippo lighter.
  • Blaisdell was the business man.
  • The original outside hinge model made in 1934 was a flawed design.
  • They began the "Fix it Free" campaign so that their business didnt go down completly.

Trampoline

  • Nissen was 16 and was attending a travelling circus show when the idea of a trampoline came to him.
  • Nissen was a keen gymnast and swimmer. He happened to be watching acrobats do tricks and land on a safety net but thought how much cooler it would be if they could bounce back up and continue performing.
  • The first piece of equipment made was called a bouncing rig.
  • Griswold was his gymnastic coach and helped him make the trampoline.
