The most important thing I learned was to do my own assessments along with looking at the IEPs. By doing my own assessments I can better accommodate and modify student needs in order to achieve their potential for learning.
Some of the limitations that I found were:
- There was more American content available than Canadian content in regards to studies and resources
- Resources that I did find provided more strategies rather than "how to" guides about planning for children with special needs or multiple needs
To begin my learning helped me to reflect as an educator and assess my own practice while adding to it. I was able to see what I am doing and not doing and what my next steps would be. I also learned that there are way more areas of special needs then I was familiar with so this new learning forced me to research further and add this new information to my practice. I will be teaching a special needs class this year and this is my first time teaching a designated classroom which is why all pieces of information learned was important for me.
"knowing how to modify and accommodate the needs of students with exceptionalities."
The only question I have is where and how do I get started when planning for children with special needs? In particular students who may have multiple needs.
After reading through the resources that I had collected over the course I found that I learned how to apply the strategies that I already knew and had but in a mathematical context. A lot of the strategies that were used in different contexts or for different purposes such as behaviour management could be applied in math. For example, visual schedules can be used in mathematics for teaching students steps to problem solving.
