Old theories Being Questioned in Light of New Research

Major Psychologists involved in ESP Research

About 15 percent of the country, according to a 2005 Baylor Religion Survey; and 41 percent in another survey, believe that people have extrasensory perception, such as telekinesis (or psychokinesis, the ability to move objects through mind power); precognition (knowing future events before they happen); and telepathy or clairvoyance (French for "clear sight" — describing things at a remote location). Brain scans and other new developments are testing this theory to see if it is scientifically provable.

New Developments

  • J.B. Rhine ("Father of Modern Parapsychology" )-impact of early research and studies with shuffled decks of cards with 5 sets of 5 different symbols was tremendous , term "ESP" became popular because of him
  • Daryl Bem-conducted 9 experiments with data that imply that future experiences can influence responses in present
  • Arthur Koestler-left 400,000 pounds to fund an academic chair in parapsychology, Koesterler Parapsychology Unit in psychology department at University of Edinburgh
  • Sir Richard Burton-coined the term "extrasensory perception" or "ESP"
  • Charles Honorton- known for"dream telepathy" experiments, Director of the Division of Parapsychology and Psychophysics at Maimonides, founded the Psychophysical Research Labaratories (PRL) in Princeton, left many publications of his research

Brain scans are new developments that give us more of an insight on whether ESP exists. Harvard experts are using neuro-imaging to interpret brain waves of people who claim to have ESP abilities.

Because of the many uncertainties, there are thousands of controversial experiments being conducted to this day, to prove it correct or incorrect.

Brief History

Extrasensory Perception

Expectations for The Future

  • Extrasensory perception was first introduced to psychology by Sir Richard Burton in 1870.
  • It was further researched by Duke University Psychology Professor JB Rhine, who used the term ESP to include psychic abilities like clairvoyance and telepathy.
  • A department of parapsychology was created in the University of Edinburgh in 1962, when Dr. John Beloff became a psychology professor there. ESP was extensively studied there along with psychokinesis.
  • After Daryl Bem, professor of social psychology at Cornell University conducted nine studies concentrated on ESP in 2010, and published his findings in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, and many people sought out to replicate his findings.

  • Consequently, a recent study done by Margarett Webb and Piers Howe from the University of Melbourne in 2014, replicating Bem's findings, yeilded negative results, indicating that that ESP will not go far.

  • However firm ESP believers firmly hold their stance that ESP is an existing phenomenon, and that it cannot be represented according to empirical data.

Current Research Part 2

Mother Dearest (season 1 episode 2)

Mother Dearest was the second episode of the first season of "That's So Raven". It originally aired on Disney channel on January 17,2003. "That's So Raven" is a TV show focusing on an eccentric and upbeat teenage girl, Raven Baxter, who has extrasensory perception or ESP. She has the psychic ability to see into the future, which is having knowledge of events before they happen, or precognition. Raven has visions about the future and she can prevent certain events from happening however often times that doesn't turn out well in the end. In her visions, Raven can only see a part of the scene that's happening, and she is unable to see the cause of it or why it happened in the first place.

For example, the first vision Raven has on Mother Dearest is when she ends up getting in trouble with Mr. Petracelli for taking back to him. In her vision she sees her classmates cheering for her but the reason is unknown. So, she incorrectly interprets her vision as her classmates cheering for her and supporting her when she stood up to Mr. Petracelli. But unfortunately none of them support her inside the classroom. Her second vision is when she foresees Mr. Petracelli demanding her to get her mother to speak with him.

She is unsure of the reason behind it and comes up with a plan to fake being her mother so she wouldn't actually get in trouble with her parents. Raven's final vision in this episode after she has resolved the conflict with her teacher by impersonating her mother, is when she sees her parents walking in to Mr. Petracelli's classroom to speak with him after the voicemail he had left them regarding Raven's behavior. To solve this conflict she goes back to the classroom and gets her teacher to leave but she gets caught as her parents walk in at that moment when she was exiting. Although her visions helped her to see the future, she ended up being in trouble regardless at the end.

  • People who claim to have ESP gain access to

knowledge of current events occurring throughout the world and thus scientists consider this as a topic that can be further explored. Thought they have conducted experiments in the various subcategories of ESP like psychokinesis, clairvoyance, and precognition, their main focus is on telepathy.

  • Telepathy is the ability to read people's minds and comprehend the information. In a common experiment, a person goes through a deck of cards that contains one of the five symbols (star, cross, square, circle, wavy lines), and the other person who is "psychic" determines what card they are looking at.
  • If the receiver after being put in a covered area where it's impossible to see the other person, accurately determines the card they are looking at several times than that is a sign of ESP. But research yields that no person has been accurate and can't actually "read" minds. Due to this reason there has been no research or experiments that are often conducted about ESP.
  • There is also no hypothesis that supports the existence of ESP. Those who still have belief perseverance of its existence fail to acknowledge that evidence can't be analogized about ESP, which is one of the key elements of scientific behavior.

  • Now that we have new technologies, there are researches (such as brain scanning) that scientists are conducting to test the existence of extrasensory perceptions.
  • Harvard University psychologists are using neuro-imaging of the brain to test the common belief that ESP exists. They tested thousands of adults and found that all stimuli, both to ESP and non-ESP, yielded the same results.
  • Extrasensory perception continues to be very controversial.
  • In addition to neuro-imaging, 9 studies conducted by Daryl Bem in 2010 giving evidence of ESP, were then replicated by two researchers from the University of Melbourne in January, 2014.
