- Michael Jordan, the legendary basketball star, is an NC native and became famous while playing here
- The NFL Carolina Panthers are based in Charlotte
- The Venus Flytrap is found natively only in North and South Carolina
- Wilmington, North Carolina is the second largest US film industry outside of Hollywood. Iron Man 2 was filmed here!

Bluegrass music
a sub-genre of country, bluegrass is American roots music and is inspired by the Appalachian Mountains. Also referred to as folk. Begun by settlers from Ireland and England. Common instruments are banjos, fiddles, guitars, mandolins, and an upright bass.
Electronic music
Some of the most popular synthesizers were produced in the Moog Factory in Asheville. Electronic music is very popular in this city.

Greensboro
Greensboro is known for its many beautiful parks and gardens (visit The Arboretum!), its diversity, and fascinating history. Established in 1808, it was named after Revolutionary War General Nathanael Greene. Greensboro played a major role in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s with the Woolworth sit-in. (See the original counter at the International Civil Rights Museum on Elm St). Greensboro also has a large arts culture. The Weatherspoon Art Museum is known by artists all over the world, and is located right on our campus! It houses works by several world-famous artists, including Matisse, de Kooning, Warhol, and Picasso! With 8 different colleges and universities, Greensboro is known also for its large population of collegiate students. We welcome you to UNC-Greensboro as one of them and we hope you enjoy your time here!

- The Appalachian Mountains have hiking trails, including the Appalachian Trail that begins in Georgia and ends in Maine! You can hike, climb, snowboard, and ski in North Carolina's mountains. Hanging Rock State Park is just one hour from campus!
- In the east, North Carolina has beautiful beaches. Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina is famous for its charm. The Outer Banks are beautiful also, with sand dunes that are up to 100ft tall!
- There are also many lakes, rivers, and marshes to explore in North Carolina.

Early History of NC
- North Carolina, before it had its name, was originally inhabited by 28 different American Indian tribes
- The first English child born in America, Virginia Dare, was born in Roanoke, North Carolina, in 1587
- Sir Walter Raleigh (where our capital gets its name) began 2 settlements in the 1580s, but neither survived
- It was then settled in the 1650s by colonists from England, and was established a state, independent from England, in 1789
- North Carolina is named after Charles I of England (Charles in Latin is Carolus)
