INTRODUCTION

1

The present research in the book Autonomous Language Learning with Technology Beyond the Classroom (Chun Lai) suggests that there is a bidirectional relationship between learner autonomy and learning activities. The interest in this concept is currently focused in the field of education, mainly on the improvement of communicative competencies of LE (foreign language) learning and digital skills with the insertion of technologies in educational environments.

To analyze the factors that influence self-learning, teachers would be taken into account as they play an important role, to facilitate autonomous learning outside the classroom, because they encourage in different people through subjective theories, the commitment and relationships with technology improving their ability to understand.

The current situation of the educational sector is characterized by a constant increase in ICT and rapid technological development, which is also reflected in the environment, as a result obtaining a large selection of digital tools delivered mainly through the internet or educational software, with which they manage to face new challenges and develop new skills.

Who is Chun Lai?

Chun Lai is Associate Professor, Division of Chinese Language and Literature, University of Hong Kong. Her PhD is from Michigan State University, USA.

DEVELOPMENT

Autonomous Language Learning with Technology Beyond the Classroom de Lai (2017)

2

This book is an essential tool for language researchers and teachers, as it provides necessary data on how to support students in their learning practices and their use of technology, when they are outside the classroom.

This book makes a contribution in two directions:

(1) Explores how technology-enhanced learning and autonomous learning cooperate with each other.

(2) Delves into how language learning is transformed in environments outside the classroom.

Nowadays, education goes hand in hand with technology, since the use of technological tools is necessary for an optimal education.

3

Autonomous learning induces the student to learn by himself, through the realization of educational activities that complement the activities performed in class, since it is important that students are responsible for their own learning.

The relationship between technology and language teaching and learning has been long and, in many ways, fruitful. Warschauer & Meskill (2000, p. 304)

The book is divided into three main parts:

4

Part One: Understanding autonomous language learning outside the classroom with technology.

1. Introduces key concepts

Holistic understanding of the aspects of autonomous learning.

Explains three theories.

1.- Learner experiences.

2.- The factors that affect learners' technology experiences.

3.- Development of autonomy with technology.

2. Background and theoretical frameworks.

Learner engagement and interaction with technology, as well as the quality of different types of learning activities in an out-of-school context.

3. The nature of autonomous language learning with technologies outside the classroom.

4.The main factors influencing autonomous language learning with technology outside the classroom.

These factors include age, socioeconomic context, affective and cognitive factors as well as linguistic context.

5

Part Two: Encouraging independent language learning outside the classroom with technology.

5. Learner training.

Students should receive training on how to use the technology on their own and guidance on how to use it.

Teachers should guide learners to develop autonomous skills.

6. The role of teachers.

7. The design of resources and the environment.

Includes a list of suggestions for developing teacher autonomy and learner autonomy.

6

Part Three: Research on autonomous language learning outside the classroom with technology.

The book examines research conducted in the context of autonomous language learning outside the classroom using technology.

8. Key research areas and research methods.

Summary of suggestions for students, teachers, and materials designers listed in relation to what is proposed for developing autonomous learning in out-of-class settings through technology.

9. Conclusion and way forward.

CONCLUSION

7

In conclusion, autonomous learning has a remarkable impact on the intellectual development of the learner. The autonomous learner will become more reflective and independent with the growing popularity of technology-enhanced learning. It makes it easier to study several languages or careers at the same time. It significantly increases human capabilities and causes well-being. It stimulates creativity and makes learners more productive. It improves communication between people, allowing them to socialize in a more assertive way.

You will progress on your own and become more confident in your knowledge and in your learning process. It may not be an easy task to be a student who manages to learn autonomously, although it is not impossible.

For this reason, the teacher must respect the student's learning desires and adopt innovative methodological tools to investigate and show the uniqueness of language learning outside the classroom with technology, accompanying the student in the process. The voluntary deepening in wanting to know more, should be based on the development of their own thinking and personal interests.
