THE SOUND OF THE SHELL
Following an aircraft catastrophe, Ralph and Piggy met on an island. Piggy discovered a conch shell and had Ralph blow it to signal the start of the assembly. Ralph was chosen as the new commander, with Jack in charge of the hunters. Ralph, Jack, Piggy, and the other guys went on an island exploration.
FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN
Ralph revealed the rule for who gets to speak on the conch. Ralph used Piggy's spectacles to ignite a fire on the mountain as a rescue signal. During a meeting, a little nun talked about a snake or beast.
“All at once, he found he could talk fluently and explain what he had to say.”
HUNTS ON THE BEACH
Ralph and Simon constructed cottages while Jack was fascinated with hunting. Ralph and Jack got into a fight. Ralph desired to construct a fire and a shelter, whilst Jack desired to go meat hunting. Simon traveled to a remote spot to gather fruit for the littluns.
PAINTED FACES AND LONG HAIR
At the beach, Roger and Maurice tormented the littluns. Jack got some paint on his face and then murdered a pig. As a ship passed by, Ralph and Jack argued about letting the fire burn out and losing their chance of being seen. Piggy's glasses were broken when Jack hit him in the stomach.
“They obeyed the summons of the conch, partly because Ralph blew it, and he was big enough to be a link with the adult world of authority; and partly because they enjoyed the entertainment of the assemblies.”
Ralph convened a meeting to remind the lads of their responsibilities to the group. A littlun reported a monster rising from the water. Piggy yearned for an adult's direction as Jack rushed away.
“He lost himself in a maze of thoughts that were rendered vague by his lack of words to express them. Frowning, he tried again. This meeting must not be fun, but business.”
After a jet was shot down, a deceased parachutist fell from the skies and became tangled in rocks and trees. When Sam and Eric realized it was the beast, they informed Ralph. The guys go off in search of the beast.
The search for the beast went on. The deceased parachutist was discovered by Jack, Ralph, and Roger while searching the mountain. It was mistaken for the beast by the lads. They ran down the mountain, terrified, to alert the group.
Jack attempted but failed to remove Ralph as chief. Following Jack, Roger, Maurice, and other hunters, they formed their tribe at Castle Rock. They slaughtered a pig and presented the beast with its head as a gift. Simon had a vision of The Lord of the Flies.
Simon went investigating and came across the parachutist who had died. He grasped the beast's true nature and proceeded to inform the others. Around the fire, the other boys were dancing. They encountered the beast and killed it, only to discover Simon's body.
In the original tribe, Ralph, Piggy, Sam, and Eric were the only guys remaining. Piggy comforted Ralph, who was in tears because Simon had been slain. The plan was for Jack and the others to steal the fire. Ralph's tribe was invaded, and Piggy's glasses were stolen.
Ralph confronted Jack and demanded that he return Piggy's glasses. They struggled, and Sam and Eric were taken, prisoner. Roger murdered Piggy by rolling a massive rock.
Ralph attempted to persuade Sam and Eric to assist him. They advised Ralph to flee and that Jack was preparing for his assassination. The hunters set fire to the forest the next day in order to draw Ralph out. They tracked him down and pursued him. When Ralph arrived at the shore, he was joined by a navy officer.
“I should have thought,” said the officer as he visualized the search before him, “I should have thought that a pack of British boys–you're all British, aren't you–would have been able to put up a better show than that.”
