Overview

In a parallel universe very similar to our own, there are still conflicts, wars, enemies, allies, and heroes. But this world has some things we don't have: machines that tell the truth, dæmons, witches, a corrupted church, and a secret war fought in the shadows. La Belle Sauvage is the first installment in the fantasy trilogy, The Book of Dust, by Philip Pullman. Anyone who loves intrigue, mystery, and delving into a new world full of adventure will find La Belle Sauvage to be a perfect fit.

Dæmons

These creatures are not ghosts or monsters but quite the opposite. When a child is born they have dæmon, and until they die, that dæmon stays at their side. Each dæmon can take the form of any creature, real or non-real. Once its human counterpart reaches the onset of puberty, the dæmon takes on a shape that represents the person's true nature and doesn't change ever again.

Malcolm Polstead

Malcolm lives a great, innocent life. He spends his days waiting tables at his father's pub, helping the nuns at the nearby priory, and exploring the vast network of rivers and canals in Oxford, England. Then, on one of those adventures on the canals, Malcolm witnesses something he will never forget.

Change

Suddenly, Malcolm's life is turned upside down as he is thrown into a hidden war full of deception, secret organizations, new discoveries, and lots of danger. With his dæmon Asta by his side, Malcolm has to decide who to trust and where to go in a world devastated by a horrible flood.

Dust

Dust, in Malcolm's world, is what is known as an elementary particle. It is a subject of many controversies in the church because some people claim that it is the thing that creates the human conscience. These controversies are what caused the main antagonist, Gerard Bonneville, to lose his job and credibility.

Lyra

Lyra is the infant daughter of Lord Asriel and Mrs. Coulter. Because of her father's position, Lyra is the subject of many conflicts, and many people want to capture her. Malcolm found her hidden in the Priory at Godstow, where he often is, and decided he would care for her however he could. The flood forces him to take Lyra in his trusty canoe, La Belle Sauvage, across the floodwaters to try to bring her to safety.

Theme

I think that La Belle Sauvage covers the fact that the corrupt Church is denying people their right to free thought and speech. People are often punished for speaking out against them, and this tension between the ruling Church and the people of Oxford is causing a spark of rebellion in its citizens.

The author, Philip Pullman, says that the Book of Dust series will cover the theories of mortality and whether we are beings of matter or spirit. I think he will use Dust as a way to convey it.

The Flood

Much of La Belle Sauvage is set during a huge flood. The raging waters ravage the land, and Malcolm has to traverse these waters in his canoe. Malcolm also has to keep away from the CCD, a group that enforces the church's laws, and Gerard Bonneville, a man who wants to kidnap baby Lyra.

After...

Philip Pullman (the author of The Book of Dust) has another best selling series called His Dark Materials. It follows a now twelve-year-old Lyra on her many adventures across different worlds. So, if you read La Belle Sauvage and want more I recommend reading His Dark Materials.
