"Runner" by Carl Deuker is a novel about a highschooler named "Chance Taylor'' who lives in poverty alongside his alcoholic father in his dads old boathouse. The Story about chance is he gets an odd job from the fat guy where he delivers packages to weird locations and to shady people. He continues to make contemplating decisions in his life that affects the characters around him and continues to unfold the mystery behind his peculiar job.

Chance Taylor is the main protanganist in this book. he's 17 years old highschooler who is looking to help his alcoholic dad and try to keep their house boat by trying any opportunities he gets

Chance's dad:

Chance's dad is a ex-military soldier who suffers from ptsd. he's an alcoholic to cope and always losing his job but always perservere his way to get a new job

Melissa:

Charles Burdett:

Melissa is a girl who is Chance's best friend. she's a previliaged person who works for the school newspaper but majority of the time, worries about Chance as the story progresses as well showing interest to him.

Charles, preferably known as "The fat guy" is the main Antangonist in this story, he is the reason why the conflict between all the characters occured.

Charles' flaws is being selfish and lacks empathy throughout the story and continues to do so by exploiting the protangonist to do illeagal operation for money for himself. he's also known for his impulsivness to the protangonist aswell

Chance's major flaws are that he struggles on trusting others at the point it affects the people he personally knows throughout the story , he also struggles on deciding since he never really had or was taught a good sense of decision because his parents had split apart from each other, thus didnt have that much a guide to whats right or whats wrong

What motivates the Protagonist to act?

What motivates the Antagonist to act?

Majority of the time, Chance is motivated by sympathy for his alcoholic dad and his future slowly pulling away from him , thus, creating a mindset that he will do anything to achieve his goal.

Charles is soly motivated for money and greed in the entirety of this novel but he is also motivated by fear since his higher ups are dangerous people known to this story which pushes his character to sacrafice anything to survive

what character is the most believable?

The most believable character in this story would be Chance Taylor because his flaws are the most relatable to most people since many people struggles with decision making and trust issues nowadays. his personality is considered believable because it portrays a teenagers dealing with personal conflicts.

How do the characters in the story develop or enhance the theme?

In this novel, one major theme throughout this story is "desperation". Almost every character in this story consist of this trait like for example our protangonist, he's desperate to get money to live out of poverty, or for example Melissa, shes desperate to get into Stanford, while also desperate to help Chance. this theme is always mentioned in this book for either good or bad.

How does the conflict in the story develop or enhance the theme?

The conflict develops the theme of desperation by giving the characters, such as Chance, a job that will pay him a lot but puts him at severe risks of danger which is a direct influence of desperation. The main conflict overall is an influence of desperation alongside of indecisiveness since the main conflict is Chance deciding whats right or wrong and trying desperatley getting out of poverty with his dad.

How do the symbols in the story develop or enhance the theme?

One symbol that is the driving force for most characters in this story is money because money is the impulse of desperation since the characters will do literally anything for it, like how charles will get into illegal business and will exploit children like Chance to make money out of desperation.

The story's theme for this story gives off a vibe where the Protangonist lives in a very poor place and leaves off a sense of despair, distress or the theme desperation becauase of the way he depicts the description of the worldbuilding

How does the Conflict reflect the context of the time in which the was written.

Carl Deuker gives off a tone of grittiness, urgency, reflecting the high stakes and emotional depth to chances character. This tone enhances the theme since the tone would make most people desperate for essential things, thus emphazing the theme of desperation

in the time it was set in the early 2000's where substance abuse was heavily around that time and since the conflicts revolves around Chance transporting packages to shady people coincides with the context of the time

How does the Author's create a believable conflict?

the way Carl Deuker created such a believable conflict is because its based off real events during the early 2000's and the conflict with Chance feels believable because it tells us how powerless and hopeless it is to be in Chances shoes since he has no choice nor power over the decision he made after he joined them making more realistic and believable!

How does the setting affect the plot of the story?

The setting in this story is it takes place in Seattle, Washington, and the way how it affects the plot is that Chance is a runner and based how the setting can create a sense of urgency and suspense since the book always describe where Chance runs to or how suspensful the setting he is in
