I AM MORE NERVOUS THAN MOST PEOPLE
- Even if the levels of anxiety differ, at least 40% of the other people are as equally nervous
SPEAKING ANXIETY IS THE NUMBER ONE FEAR
- The result of the previous study was misinterpreted. The survey was limited and asked for ‘common fears’, not the ‘biggest fears’.
- Do not tell audience you are unprepared
- Pick a topic you truly care about and prepare
- A standard rule of thumb is that each minute of speaking time requires one to two hours of preparation time
- Envision success in performance
- Research has shown that this kind of mental imaging can significantly increase athletic performance (Ungerleider, 2005 as cited in Lucas, 2009 p.13) and control stage fright (Ayres et al., 1997 as cited in Lucas, 2009 p.13)

- It’s hard to be convincing if you look tense and insecure
- No perfect presentation
- Errors will not be known to audience if well managed
- Presentation as an act of communication and performance
