What is CRISPR?
Science can now alter genes in any living organism- including humans.
-CRISPR allows possibilites to be endless.
-If there is an undesired trait, CRISPR can edit the gene to a more desired trait.
-Then, that new gene will be the one that gets passed on for generations.
Tom and Sue are expecting a baby. Tom wants their kid to be able to excel in basketball but Sue knows that the kid's height won't be tall enough.
With gene alterations being done, Tom and Sue's baby will be able to be 6'7" and will have no troubles when it comes to height.
Robert and Vanessa want to have kids but the couple are both carriers of Tay-Sachs disease. However, Vanessa and Robert have always dreamed of starting their own family.
With the help of CRISPR, Robert and Vanessa were able to have a child and alter the child's DNA. In doing so, they made sure their child is not born with Tay-Sachs disease.
CRISPR is still undergoing research, but this technology opens up the door to change humans and the way we develop.
Whether it is enhancing physical characteristics, preventing heiritable diseases, or eliminating abnormalities; CRISPR will allow these genes to be altered.
-CRISPR has a lot to do with DNA and altering the genes inside the DNA.
-Our textbook talks about genotypes and phenotypes in chapter 2.
-Genotypes are the actual genes while phenotypes is what we can see.
Since CRISPR alters the genes, the phenotype is being changed as well. The two stories are example on how the genotype and phenotype change with CRISPR's help
