-By 1945, Canada was a huge supplier of war material.
-Things they produced included military vehicles, aircrafts, and small arms ammunition.
-Most of this was shipped to Britain to directly help the war effort.
-Because of the new demand, the unemployment rate fell to virtually zero. Both men and women were working in these factories.
-Canada also supplied food to troops overseas, with thanks to the many Canadian people aiding the farmers. Fresh fruits, vegetables, and other things like powdered milk and eggs, were all supplied to Britain and elsewhere.
-There was no doubt that being a family member left behind during wartime was difficult. Lonliness and fear invaded the thoughts of family daily.
-For children, some grew up not knowing their fathers, or had to deal with their fathers being killed.
-The war affected children greatly. In Canada, Younger children were encouraged to donate to "Victory Loan" campaigns to help soilders overseas, had to ration their favourite foods (such as candy/sweets). Older children were expected to volunteer on farms, or train as cadets in preparation for military service.
-Many British children were forced to evacuate Britian/leave their families and seek safety in Canada and other safe countries. Over 5,000 British children came to Canada during World War 2. After the war, many went back home, while some stayed.
(Canadian Author Kit Pearson has a trilogy of books that relate to this topic).
Unlike World War 1, the Second World War brought about change for women.
-Many women were still nurses, as in the first World War, but women began other jobs such as clerical/administrative duties, working on the front assembly lines, or in shipyards.
-In Britain, women were given autonomy and power, doing jobs such as translating, working in the secret service, and being spies.
-Unfortunately, the moment the war was over, most women lost these jobs and were forced to go back being housewives for their husbands.
Conscription: What is it?
For the most part, Germans thrived during the war.
World War 2 had boosted the economy, creating more work for people. There was no homelessness, and many people did not know about the horrors of the concentration camps.
Children and teenagers were put into groups called "Hitler's Youth." Here, they were taught to do basic tasks, but more importantly, were taught to follow and respect Hitler.
*Why do you think Hitler targeted young people?
