ESL (English Second Language)

ESL is, "a traditional term for the use or study of the English language by non-native speakers in an English-speaking environment (it is also known as English for speakers of other languages.)" (Nordquist) Students who are not proficient in english yet, since they have been acustumed to speaking another language are often refered to as ESL students.

Sheltered English Instruction

"In a nutshell, sheltered instruction is a set of strategies designed to help English Language learners learn academic English at the same time they are learning academic content." (Kelly) This is common in many classrooms. It is the intention of schools to help students gain knowledge of the english language while also considering the need to keep up academically with their grade level peers.

Structured English Immersion (SEI)

Structured English Immersion or SEI refers to a classroom where all students are limited in their academic learning by their knowledge of the english language. AZELLA scores determine where a student is placed in proficiency and in what areas they are struggling with. These students are catagorized Pre-Emergent, Emergent, Basic, or

Intermediate. The intention of classrooms like these are to provide multiple hours daily of exposure to English instruction and targeted instruction.

Students who, "are students who are unable to communicate fluently or learn effectively in English, who often come from non-English-speaking homes and backgrounds, and who typically require specialized or modified instruction in both the English language and in their academic courses." (“English-Language Learner Definition.”)

Arizona's Language Development Approach is centered on th eunderstanding that EL students are all valued members of the learning community. "through implementation of the four principles, Arizona's EL students will develop a sense of agency, confidence, and determination." (Hopkins)

Student agengcy is the pride and motivation that students take in their own learning. It helps students take owner ship of their own learning and critically think about the content that they are learning. As a student it is important to encourage EL student so that they are able to feel proud of what they are learning and confident to take on new challenges.

Newcomer, Pull-out, Two hour, 50-50 dual language immersion.

Newcomer SEI Model- Similar to the SEI Model including many assessments and clear expectations.

Two hour SEI Model- Students are assessed and given specific targetted language instruction especially relating to real world senerios. Teachers have a criteria of how many hours of this instruction is required. Students are closely monitored on progress.

50-50 dual language immersion- 50% of the class teaching targetted language and 50% english language.

Pull-out SEI Model- Students are pulled out of the main group to be worked on one on one usually with a specialized ELL instructor.
