William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream is a comedic love story that details Helena and Hermia's pursuit of the men they love. While the two characters seem very different on the surface, they have more in common than what is shown.
HERMIA AND HELENA
Shakespeare's midsummer nights dream depicts a complicated relationship between two young women as they follow their hearts towards the men they each love. Each of them are tested throughout the play as they sacrifice and cross the line when it comes to getting their way. But like every strong friendship in the end it all works out for the two women and their partners.
Helena is the former partner to Demetrius who is now in love with her best friend: Hermia. Still being in love with Demetrius, Helena spends her time chasing after him even though he wants nothing to do with her. Helena is shown to be disloyal towards Hermia as she reveals the plan of Hermia and Lysander running away together to Demetrius. Helena proves to be selfish as not only did Hermia and Lysander confide in her but she uses their secret plan to get close to Demetrius. Helena is tested throughout the midsummer night’s dream when it comes to jealousy, friendship and chasing after her former partner.
"You draw me you hard - hearted adamant! But yet you draw not iron for my heart is true as steel. Leave you your power to draw, and i shall have no power to follow you."
Hermia is the daughter of Egeus who is a beautiful, young women in love with a man she cannot be with. controlled by her fathers opinions she is pressured into a relationship with a man named Demetrius but being as she is: willing to assert her views, she plans to humiliate her father publicly by agreeing to run away with then man she loves, Lysander. Hermia and Helena have been in a close relationship since their childhood, but many situations test their friendship throughout their journey.
"O, when she is angry she is keen and shrewd; she was a vixen when she went to school"
Hermia and Helena's relationship has changed greatly after the intervention of Puck with the love potion. Once best friends, they have become each others enemies, and all for the love of Lysander and Demetrius.
Hermia and her father:
Shakespeare introduces Hermia to us as the disobedient daughter of Egeus. She's supposed to marry Demetrius, but she's fallen in love with Lysander. She's bold to stand up for herself. Hermia either faces the consequences of death of becoming a nun if she does not obey her father. "As she is mine, I may dispose of her; which shall be either to this gentleman or to her death." - egeus
She loves him, but he wishes her dead. Then, he loves her but she thinks it is a joke. It seems like these two lovers cannot get on the same page at all. Helena and Demetrius end up being a funny and extremely complicated couple. Demetrius who is now in love with her best friend wants nothing to do with a lady who is madly in love with him, even though he has warned her that he will use physical abuse to get her away.
"I am your spaniel; and Demetrius, the more you beat me i will fawn on you"
just like every normal human being we do things for a reason. in a Midsummer Nights Dream, the two young ladies Hermia and Helena have many motivations and aspirations. they make good, bad, evil and nice desicions to get their way, but what are some of their goals and motivations which are visible throughout their roll?
GOALS: to run away with Lysander and escape having to marry Demetrius. Hermia either faces the consequences of death of becoming a nun if she does not obey her father.
MOTIVATIONS: Being angry at her father the thought of running away with the wrong man and disobeying her orders seems like a good idea to Hermia.
'I beg the ancient privilege of Athens: "As she is mine, I may dispose of her, which shall be either to this gentleman or to her death, according to our law immediately provided in that case."
Yes, Helena's main goal and motivation is most likely the character Demetrius. being madly in love with him still... we understand that a lot of Helena's actions come from the influence of Demetrius. throughout the story when Lysander and Hermia plan to run away and confide in Helena not to spread the news... Helena takes this information to her advantage to pursue her goals hoping to connect with Demetrius.
"You draw me, you hard-hearted adamant! But yet you draw not iron, for my heart is true as steel. Leave you your power to follow you. And I shall have no power to follow you."
Hermia and Helena can be nice and naughty. bold and bad. mysterious but mean. Strong and scheming. lets have a look at some of the strengths and flaws between these to girls throughout the story.
Hermia is a likeable character. Her boldness is a little reminiscent of that favourite Shakespeare heroine, Hermia is no fool. Hermia holds onto her love no matter the circumstances or consequences. Even after Lysander has deserted her, Hermia's final thoughts before going to sleep in the forest are of Lysander; she prays for his safety rather than cursing him. Hermia's relentless. shes true to her love and she trusts the people close to her.
"heavens shield Lysander, if they mean a fray"
Shakespeare introduces Hermia to us as the disobedient daughter of Egeus. She's supposed to marry Demetrius, but she's fallen in love with Lysander. Being as she is: bold and disobedient causes some trouble for Hermia as her father is either going to kill her or turn her into a nun.
Helena is an interesting character. she spends her whole time fussing over a man that does not love her. she also spends all her time self - pitying. In the play, even when Demetrius and Lysander both fall for Helena, she can't believe them. It seems Helena has spent so much time rationalizing why she isn't loved that, when the thing comes along (real or not), she can't embrace it and enjoy it for what it is. Helena needs to overcome her insecurities.
"I pray you, though you mock me, gentlemen,"
As we can see, Helena and Hermia are two very different people let alone two very different personalities. But if we study them closely we actually see these two ladies having similar attributes.
Towards the beginning of the story Helena was jealous of Hermia but when the potion was placed on Lysander and Demetrius, Hermia is the one that gets jealous.
“O me, you juggler, you canker – blossom, you thief of love! What, have you come by night and stol’n my lovers heart from him?”
Hermia and Helena are also both loved by Lysander. At the beginning of “A Midsummer Nights Dream” Lysander tells Hermia and the rest of the characters that he truly loves Hermia. Then towards the middle of the book, Lysander changes his views and starts to love Hermia.
"Is all the counsel that we two have shared,
The sisters' vows, the hours that we have spent,
When we have chid the hasty-footed time 1240
For parting us,—O, is it all forgot? We, Hermia, like two artificial gods,
Have with our needles created both one flower,
Both on one sampler, sitting on one cushion, 1245
Both warbling of one song, both in one key,
As if our hands, our sides, voices and minds,
Had been incorporate. So we grow together,
Like to a double cherry, seeming parted"
