What it is ...

What it isn't ...

What it is.....

What it isn't ....

Peer observation is ...

a structured approach that involves teachers observing each other's practice and learning from one another, focusing on teachers' individual needs and the opportunity to both learn from others' practice and offer constructive feedback to peers.

Peer observation is not ....

judgemental, emotive, unstructured, superficial or lacking an evidence base. It is not a forum for making judgements about teacher effectiveness based on indiviual opinion, nor is it about performance management.

PEER OBSERVATION

TEACHER SELF-REFLECTION

  • when will the observation occur?
  • what is the focus?
  • what form will the evidence take?
  • what methodology will be used to collect the evidence?
  • This process must consolidate trust between the observer and the teacher being observed.
  • consider areas of practice that might be a focus for the observation
  • consider how whole-school priorities might link with the focus
  • consider influences which might restrict the experience of peer observation, reflection and feedback.
  • be prepared for the classroom visit - the observation should be based on your usual practices, not uncharacteristic ones
  • students should be aware of the observation
  • observer gathers evidence inform collaborative reflection and feedback.
  • personal reflection should have taken place before the POC
  • a factual, evidence-based conversation
  • discuss and reflect on the aspects of the agreed focus
  • builds awareness about the impact of teaching strategies on student learning
  • teachers learn from each other

Where To Next?

Where To Next?

  • "Assessment of Readiness" and Peer Observation Protocols to be developed in conjunction with Leadership to ensure the school is ready to implement peer observation
  • Learning Specialists will implement the first round of observations to identify common needs across all year levels and curriculum areas
  • A range of focus areas will be distributed to staff as a means of creating peer observation relationships based on needs and expertise
  • Staff will negotiate with their chosen peer to implement the cycle of peer observation
