History

History

Sodium was discovered by Humphry Davy in 1807. Humphry discovered Sodium in a laboratory. The word Sodium originated from the Latin word Natrium or Arabicnatrum and the Egyptian word Ntry (Natrun).

Physical Characteristics

-Sodium is a solid phase in room temperature. Sodium is a silver-white like color. Sodium DOES NOT have an Odor.

Physical Characteristics

-Whenever Sodium comes in cointact with water it forms a colorless basic solution. When it comes across Acid it produces salt & hydrogen gas. With Oxygen it produces sodium peroxide. Finally, When it come across with a Base the reaction is Exothermic.

Chemical characteristics

Chemical characteristics

The Density at room temperature is 0.97 grams per cubic centimeter. Its melting point is 370.9. Its boiling point (K) is 1,156. Its oxidation states are F= -1, H= 1, & 0= -2. the Electronegavity (pauling) is 0.93. the Electron affinity (kj/mol) is 52.8 KJ/mol.

Where can you find it ?

Current information

2.6% of Earth's surface is made up with Sodium. This is a very reactive element so it is not easily found free in nature, To store pure sodium it has to be contained in a moisture- free environment.

Uses

Uses and others

Sodium is a well known element, most popular used as salt. Other uses include

- Baking Soda (NaCi)

- Soda Ash (NaHeo3)

-Borax, Glass, and paper

Toxicity and Hazards

Sodium can be irritant to the eyes, nose, and throat resulting in nose bleeds, hoarness or sore throat.

It can also affect breathing if breathed in, resulting in coughing

Toxics

Abundance

Abundance

Sodium is the 6th most abundant element on Earth.

-Its crustal abundance is 2.36 x 104 milligrams per kilo

-Its oceanic abundance is 1.08 x 104 milograms per liter

FUN FACTS !

FUN FACTS!

1. Sodium is less dense than water

2. Sodium is soft enough to cut with butter knife at room temperature

3. Yellow street lights are yellow because the light is produced by ionizing sodium vapor

4. Molten sodium is used as a heat transfer medium in some fast nuclear factors

5. AND FINALLY ! Sodium is the 9th most abundant element in the HUMAN BODY !!.
