Notes

Weathering

the process that takes place as rocks, and other parts of the geosphere, are broken down into smaller pieces

Water (rain, ice, snow) has shaped our environment by physically and chemically weathering rock and soil and transporting sediments.

There are two types of weathering: mechanical (physical) and chemical

Mechanical (physical) Weathering

the process of breaking big rocks into little ones

Freezing water can break rock without any change in the minerals that form the rock. This usually produces small particles and sand.

Examples of Mechanical Weathering

caused by frost, ice, plants, running water, sun heat, etc.

Chemical Weathering

changes that some substances can cause in the surface of a rock that make it change shape or color

Water with dissolved gases and other chemicals causes the minerals in rocks to be changed, leading to the deterioration of the rock.

Examples of Chemical Weathering

caused by carbon dioxide, oxygen, acids

Erosion

Erosion

the movement of weathered rocks by natural forces

Most of the energy that makes erosion happen is provided by the Sun.

The Sun's energy causes the movement of water and ice in the water cycle and the movement of air to create wind.

"Weathering helps make a mess. Erosion helps clean it up. "

Examples of Erosion

caused by floods, glaciers, etc.
