Osteoarthritis OA / Degenerative Arthritis

  • Rendered her fully immobile and dependent on others for daily living activites
  • Unable to eat/swallow/constantly in pain

CP: neurological disorder affects muscle movements and motor functions as well as maintainence of posture and balance

OA: degenerative joint disease; occurs when flexible tissue at the ends of bones wears down

Childhood/Early Life

- Cared for by both parents for first 5 years

- Parents separated, lived with mother

- Mother abandoned her at age 10 and put her into a children's home

Early Life

- At 18, attended San Diego State

- Received bachelor's degree in social work and later began master's degree

- Married Richard Bouvia and got pregnant

- Had a miscarriage

- Husband abandoned her; did'nt adapt to needs and finances

Climax

  • Depression Phase
  • At 26, Elizabeth admitted herself into Riverside General Hospital
  • Suffered severe arthritis , almost paralyzed
  • Put on morphine for pain

  • Suicidal thoughts/felt no quality to life
  • Made a decision to that it would be better to end her life
  • Announced she wanted to die by starving herself
  • Care takers refused and forced a feeding tube
  • Force fed against her requests
